Radiator casting info?

  • Hi im new to this form so please forgive any mistakes. I have a radiator that has Y1 C55 stamped at the end of the C4ZE number. Can anyone tell me what the Y1 is for? ive seen about the Y2 and G2 and im a little lost. Can anyone help on this one. Many Thanks

  • I have the same Y1 info after the C4ZE # ON THE DRIVERS SIDE MOUNTING FLANGE. I will get all the info this evening and post it tonight or tomorrow. I don't see anything on the tank top...G2,Y2 etc. Where exactly on the tank are you guys finding this? Ed

Ed you likely don't have a San Jose radiator

Here is what others are seeing (top tank surface)

  • I have a 65 Dearborn K GT fastback. Excellent picture...thanks. I do not have such stampings on the upper tank. However, attached to the rear drivers side of the upper tank is a small metal tag that reads "5LC 11". Also, stamped on the driver side mounting flange is

"DEP C4ZE8005 Y1 5LB". Can anyone decipher? Thanks, Ed

  • Hi again,

This is a very interesting subject. Yesterday I saw two different

San Jose radiators C4ZE, W-MO, both dated 5 65, one having a Y2 and the other G2. Both are for manual transmissions.

To me this must mean there is a difference to the cars these were

originally installed on. Why the difference otherwise?

I know the G2 are used on 65 Shelbys. Have seen original 1965 pictures of cars and cars with radiators marked G2 dated 2 65, 3 65, 4 65, and 5 65. Never seen an original 65 Shelby radiator with these

    dates marked Y2 though.

    Comments,

    Thanks,

    /Bo

  • If someone can briefly tell me how to post a pic here, I will share one of my 7R02K (4sp) original radiator...Thanks...Bob <b></b><img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Step 1 : resize your pic to 800*600 (use this tool if you dont have a program)

Step 2 : upload the pic on a pic hosting site like http://www.tinypic.com

Step 3 : copy the link to the posted pic, and insert it in your post, it should look like this [ i m g ] thelinktoyourphoto [ / i m g ] without the spaces.

    You're done.

  • According to the production codes: the month of L for the 1965 production year would be 11/64. The month of L for the 1966 production year would be 11/65. If the date code is 5LB, is the 5 the production year (11/64) or the actual year built (11/65) which would be for the 1966 production year.

5LB is the date code, 2nd week of November, 1965 (1966 production year).

  • Thank you for that explaination Charles. Unfortunately, I now know this is not the original radiator for my K which has a 6/1/65 SBD. I am now looking to trade my radiator for one with a 3/65-5/65 date code. Is this a K specific radiator or did all manual V8's get this one? (Need to know where to post...Generic or K specific parts section). Thanks, Ed

5LB is 2nd week of November, 1965, just as I posted previously. The 5 indicates the actual year, not the production year.

  • I recently removed a three row auto trans radiator with the DEP C4ZE 8005 part number from my car and do not believe it was original. The MPC lists a number of different possible part numbers for hipo radiators. It would be worth the effort to cross reference those numbers against both the K codes and the Shelbys. There are several listed core types in addition to the standard two row. I have always found it hard to believe that Ford equipped all of the hipos with 2 row radiators, but that seems to be the consensus.

Another question; were the shroud brackets different from radiator to radiator as well? There are aftermarket brackets sold for the larger radiators, but did Ford do this as well?

    I've never seen a small tag (such as AMK offers) attached to the core of a San Jose Mustang<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana" size=2 id=quote>

Jeff - excuse me for drilling down on this, but are you referring to '65-'66 cars or all SJ Mustangs? And when you say "core" - do you mean core or do you mean the radiator top tank?

  • Ford only used 2 row cores for 65 and 66 radiators regardless of horsepower or A/C. The only exception was a 3 row for 1966 8 cylinder cars with A/C built before 1/5/66. That one has Mc-E 5 on the top tank with a C6ZE on the side mounting bracket. Ford only made one size of fan shroud brackets. The 3 core radiator I just mentioned had a different mounting setup and the shroud bolted directly to the radiator. The shroud for the 3 core radiator, although similar to the others, is different as well.

  • Dave,

The Ford fan shroud brackets are 1 1/2 inches high. They put the shroud right up to the radiator core, almost too close.

Please remember that the MPC does not list what came original in a car just what will fit or what Ford had that the time that specific book was print available to use for a particular application.

Often the information is not always as useful as one would think.
