How should I clean & prep my manifolds and what should be put on them for a lasting true color finish?
Exhaust Manifold finish??

Ceramic coating would be best and last the longest. Had a set done recently and was very pleased with the results.

OK, ceramic coating! Is there more than one "color" that I should look for to be used on them?
-
A lasting true color is not easy to get. Original manifolds were natural and any paint will look 'painted'. A recomended coating I use is called McKay Graphite Spray after beadblasting. After the spray dries, the manifolds look black then turn gray when used, whick is very close to the original cast iron shade. Eastwood has some spray paint hi-temp coatings but I haven't used them.

Have not ever found a coating that replicates the natural appearance exactly, but for a driven car, ceramic coating will look very close and provide trouble-free maintenance!

Por15 also has a manifold gray paint that is close. It should be baked on the way they instruct.

I tried some dressing called Hot-Stuff I got off Ebay. I cooked it on and it looked fake. Way to silver not enough gray. I blasted it off and then tried Clayx and I am very happy. My manifolds were just blasted cean but if yours are not then wire brush the rust off. Take a tooth brush working a thin layer in. Wipe it down with a clean rag. It has been on for about 6 months and still looks as good as the same day I put it on.
I got it from Zip Corvette (GASP-I know I know) for 13.95 or Eastwood has it for 17.95 which is about what I paid with shipping from Zip. Good for 3 to 5 years and just need to rub a little more on when it fades. the little jar will last years and years.

Eastwood's paint is terrible. It is way to light in color to begin with but soon after use it turns chalky white. It is also a bear to remove. Expect hours upon hours in front of a sandblasting cabinet to get it off.
I have used the POR manifold grey and am very impressed so far. Decent color. Three years and my manifolds still look like the day I painted them.

Thanks for all the replies!! I've never heard anything about the POR line, so I think thats what I'm going to use.

Hot tanked, ceramic coated + gray powder coat holding up well.

I Emailed qccoatings listed here and have not gotten a response yet.
I spoke personally to a very reputable powder coater here in town yesterday and he told me that there was NO powder coating that could withstand exhaust manifold temps.
He said he did all the powdercoating for Harbor Auto Restoration http://www.harborautorestoration.com as well as ceramic coating on exhaust manifolds-he said they use a color called Titanium (sp) and that it is VERY CLOSE to what a just cleaned/blasted/new exhaust manifold looks like and will last for many years.

I had mine blasted, then ceramic coated, THEN powder coated with correct cast iron gray. Turned out great!

These were coated by Jet-Hot back in 11/2007. The cost was $210 for the pair, out the door. Be sure to mention the 10% internet discount. They haven't been installed yet.

Virtually everthing Eastwood sells is a bandaid or a half hearted attempt to make it right. The original finish was a natural parkerized coating, almost black, if you are going to drive the car, plating isnt the answer. We have been using techline coatings metal ceramic finish black satin http://www.techlinecoatings.com/Exhaust.htm
It looks great and doesnt burn off

I have gotten fond of rust myself. It's cheap and easy to maintain.
