Arvinode Exhaust System

  • What details are you looking for. Here are 2 pictues of an original system:

Notice the tab along the top of the tube mufflers and the large C-band clamp around the rear resonator.

The K convertible I'm restoring had this sytem, but all that was left was the original H-pipe and the rear hangers.

  • Charles,

Looks like you have your hands full with that car! Makes me appreciate mine. It's been fun these past few weeks taking all the parts off and stripping them - finding the cool original date coded part numbers and such. I can't believe how complete it still is.

  • I'm pretty sure Arvin is still in business. I wonder if they have the original drawings for the system. It would be great if they could be talked into running off a batch of these, even though the market would be very limited. Just what my January '65 coupe needs...

  • The date range for the Arvinode system was Oct/Nov '64 through April '65.

Kevin Marti had attempted to work with Arvin on reproducing some systems several years ago based on original tooling, but the deal fell through when there was a management change at Arvin. I don't know if Arvin is still in business, but the Ford archives would most likely have the original engineering drawings.

  • Thanks, I'll have him contact them. But it looks like they are in the Catalytic Converter and Muffler Business, and not Exhaust Pipes or Resonators. Maybe he can talk them into start making those systems again....

  • Charles, thanks for sharing pics of my original exhaust system. My early 65 fastback hd the Arvinode system. When I restored the car, I had no idea what it was, so I went with a system from Motive, (its a great fit) I have contacted Arvin and was told that old items (info included) are discarded once a particular system is discontinued. It would be nice if some former employee kept some of the literature. Look forward to seeing everyone this show season.

  • WOW! That's a really big deal! Based on what can be seen in the pictures, it looks like an accurate reproduction of the Fairlane HiPo system: One of the slickest stock exhaust systems ever...I wonder if it sounds as mean as the original?

  • I have yet to find any photos of the Arvinode system other than the photos that Charles has of the older system that was removed from a car during restoration. If I recall, the longer glass-packs on the front had a crimp along the top. The ebay system seems to be plain round glass-packs.

I wasn't going to say anything about that....

I've thought about "faking" a system by using standard glasspacks, but it'd probably be too loud & wouldn't look correct. The system I took off my car had glasspacks, and one time when I took it out of storage the loud exhaust set off the alarms in some other cars stored there!

  • The one you see for the 1964-65 Fairlane is made by Don's Custom Exhaust in Paris, Ohio (330-862-2096). He sells this set for $500, so there is a bit of a markup going on here. This is an "approximation" of the Arvinode system. It is not intended to be an exact reproduction. I have worked with Don on getting "approximations" made of the Fairlane dual exhaust systems. The idea is to have something better than what a muffler shop might make from scratch and with no idea of what the original pipes looked like. I provided Don with a nice original Fairlane HiPo Arvinode pipe so he could figure out the pipe bends on his bending machine. He also contracted with a muffler company to custom-make the muffler (glass-pack), and rear resonator. The original muffler and resonator were 2¾" diameter. The "approximations" are 3". There is no indentation in the mufflers for the seat belt anchor, nor is one needed. (Ford required all exhaust components maintain a 1" clearance.)

So, bottom line is that what you see is not for concours restorations, but to give the Fairlane guys a system close to the original. It is not an Arvinode system, just an approximation.

I bought an Arvinode system in 1972 and installed it on my 1962 Fairlane. It was not a "quiet" system. You could not comfortably listen to the radio. But, its sound was distinctive and said there was something special going on under the hood. We don't know what this new one sounds like yet as it was just made and none have been installed that I know of.

  • Update for all of you still interested:

Scott Halseth of NPD is trying to round up parts and has a couple of vendors he can work with now, including the one I was talking to. NPD has more horsepower than any of us, so I would encourage you to support their effort in getting the system reproduced.

I submitted a request to the Ford Archives for the drawings....don't know if they'll release anything or not, but I've made the effort

  • I would be interested in one. I believe that my Feb '65 build date car probably originally came with this system. Is there anything I can do or someone I can call to "demonstrate an interest"?

    Thanks
