I'm pretty sure that today's "93" octane fuel is fairly close to what used to be available in the 1960's. I've been driving 289 HiPo powered cars since 1969, and have NEVER had a problem with fuel vs engine performance over all the years.

Back in the Sixties and early Seventies, I used the old leaded Sunoco 260 "Super Premium" as well as the original Amoco <i>unleaded</i> premium that was also available <i>before</i> the ban on lead additives. Detonation was never a problem with a standard HiPo tune with BF-42 plugs.

Now, with the unleaded, E10 "93 Octane" fuel, my unrestored Kar still performs as good as ever, and hasn't seemed to lost any significant power. A few years ago, it ran a respectable 14.92 (from a roll) at Englishtown on skinny street radials.

Something else to consider is that the difference in price between 87 (regular) and 93 (Super Premium) Octane fuel is around $0.20/Gallon where I live. With a full fill up on a Mustang, that's around $3.00/ tank difference. At this point, K kars are occasional drivers, and if you can't afford 93 Octane, you probably can't afford a K code to begin with...

I'm packed and will be leaving Thursday morning. Hope to see you there. The weather forecast is amazing: NO RAIN AND COOLER TEMPS!

It was great to see Brian and Marv at Carlisle again. I guess I was a little off on the weather, though. A short rain shower happened on Saturday afternoon, but it was over in less than an hour or so, and the roads were dried by the time I drove out. The cooler temperatures and gentle breezes were a pleasant change from the last few years of sweltering heat and humidity.

I have found various info on K code engines in Mercury Comets. One source shows a K code Comet to be the same as an A code Mustang with a 225 HP engine. Another source shows 64 and 65 Comets with the 271 Hp engine. If the Comets had a 271 HP engine, isn't it pretty much the same as the K engine in a Mustang?

It's been a while since the '64-65 Comet K Code question has been raised around here. If you search the site Archives, you can find some some fairly detailed posts regarding these rare cars. Mercury certainly made things tough for us to decipher because certain Comet V-8 engine codes don't follow the standard Ford format we're used to.

In 1964 Comets, the K Code in the 5th position of the VIN indicated a "low compression" 289 4V engine with hydraulic lifters, and is NOT the optional 271 hp solid lifter engine available in Fairlanes. The 271 hp engine was available in Comets <i>only by special order</i>, and these cars are difficult to verify because the HiPo engine code does not appear in the VIN. A scant few have been documented with build sheets discovered inside body panels. A 6 digit DSO code should also be present on the door plate.

For 1965, the 289 HiPo was still available by special order in a Comet, but there was no specific engine code used to identify these cars either. Although the 1965 Mercury Master Parts Book refers to "Warranty Code D" for the 289 HiPo Comets, it does not appear stamped on any survivor cars that I know of. Instead, there will be an engine code "A" (289 4V) or a <i>blank</i> in the 5th position of the VIN. Like the '64 models, a 6 digit DSO code will be present on a factory 1965 HiPo Comet. Other spotting features include a 4 speed manual transmission, a heavy duty export brace, large diameter alternator pulley, and a 9 inch rear axle. Due to clearance issues, the Comets could not fit the HiPo exhaust manifolds, and did not come with a factory dual exhaust system either.

The actual engine is the same as any Fairlane or Mustang K Code, but certain HiPo Comets came with an optional transistor ignition system that wasn't offered on Fairlanes or Mustangs.

I know that there will be one K code on site. I will be driving it there.

The new motor is awesome and I turned the fastest time ever for the car at Lime Rock. Next race is May 21st at New Jersey Motorsports Park...

Good stuff...I'd like to check out the action in NJ. Last time I was there was for SAAC 33.

    <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>

the K code fairlanes for 64 had black painted blocks, gold valve covers and gold air cleaners and no fan shrouds , a classic car place owns the car and they have been trying to sell it for $85,000 for a long time

Thanks Charles. So, are these likely off of a Fairlane HIPO?
