Buyer accepted offer to end listing early.

    E-Bay Listing: 65 K Fastback

GENERAL: This is my personal car, not part of the dealer inventory. I list cars on ebay for Schaefer and Strohminger and am using the listing service for convenience. But this transaction is in no way associated with Schaefer and Strohminger.

This is the real deal. A 1965 Mustang GT Fastback 2+2 equipped with the most desirable K code engine, 289 CID with 271 HP, and factory 4 speed transmission. This is one of the rarest and most collectible Mustangs available. It is extremely difficult to find any nice fastback, let alone one that is a true GT, and a true K code. We have owned her for several years and she has gotten little use. It is an older restoration, but the paint really shines and the interior is in good shape. I would rate it about 8.5 on a 10 point scale.

EXTERIOR: The exterior is finished in poppy red, looks orange, and is in very good condition. The chrome is in very nice condition as are the rally wheels. There is some very minor pitting in the door handles and the rear tail light chrome. And this is a factory GT, enhanced by the fog lights in the grill, trumpet exhaust pipes through the rear valance, and GT rocker panel stripes.

INTERIOR: The interior is trimmed in white and is also in very good condition. Not perfect, but very presentable. Aftermarket instruments have been added, but it would not be a big deal to replace with original, if desired. The mileage shown on the original odometer was less than 60k. I believe that this is the true mileage, but have no way to verify. The carpeting is new. The headliner, seats, and dash are in very good condition.

DRIVETRAIN: Power is provided by the most desirable engine available, the original factory K code 289 CID with solid lifers. 271 HP. The engine is coupled with the correct 4 speed manual transmission and a 9 inch rear. This is the engine chosen by Carroll Shelby as the foundation for the 1965 and 1966 Shelby Mustangs and the original 289 Cobra. Awesome power. Sounds great through the dual trumpet exhaust.

So if you are in the market for a true collectible, bid with confidence. We have set a very reasonable reserve, and will entertain all serious offers.

  • Hey Tiger...I just spoke with the owner (via email), and he told me he ended the auction early for a $30,000 offer...Is this a good price for this car?

    Gunk

  • In looking at the many additional photo's (sorry guys I couldn't download them so I could post them, but if you click on the link now you can see them before they disappear) this car appears to be a clean driver. Some aftermarket guages in the instrument cluster, the glove box door has been painted over without properly prepping it , car was painted without replacing rubber and you can see runs in spots, ect.

If this listing was 6 months-1 yr. ago I would say that was pricey and $30k would have gotten you a more restored car. At today's values, this might be a fair price assuming it is numbers matching on the drivetrain. If it has the original drivetrain in good running condition, then putting another $10k into it for quality paint and detailing/replacement of interior would put you at $40k into it. Is a 65 K FB worth $40k detailed out with original drivetrain? Probably.

It is a San Jose built car, so depending on how long it has been on the east coast, and having lived a sheltered life there, rust should be at a minimum. My first thought was $25k when I first saw the listing, but for someone who wants one and doesn't have one and wants to drive it right now, paying the extra $5k to insure they get the car is a good way to lock out any competition.

Of course this is all my $.02 and we all have different opinions on car values.

  • Looks like a nice car....my favorite color. However, according to the VIN this car was built in early Oct. of '64.....before the GT or Pony interior was offered. Still, 30K sounds pretty good.

That's right...This car is listed in the Registry between consecutive unit number 143379 and 144137, which have scheduled build dates of "03K". Look closely at the engine pictures, and you'll see the dipstick is extended enough to clear a generator.

It doesn't appear that this car is as "real" as the seller wants us to believe. Whether it's worth $30K is up for debate, but it appears to have enough issues on the surface to raise doubts.

  • You guys are the greatest. I would never...never buy a K without the people on this site putting it under the microscope.

It looks like someone else was fooled when it comes to "the real thing."

1965 Mustang GT HiPo K Code

We have had this car in our showroom for about a year now, and it's time for someone else to enjoy it. This car needs no introductions. If you know anything about Mustangs, you know that this is one of the most desirable, and rarest Mustangs in the world. I take it out about twice a month on a dry day and cruise a little bit, just to keep everything moving. All the drivetrain numbers match, and everything works good. There are new gauges in the dash, but I have the originals in the trunk, as you can see in the picture. I also have an extra wiring harness, drive belt, heater core, car cover etc. The car has around 77k original miles on it, and drives like it too. Also in the pictures you can see the owners manual, a copy of the original window sticker, and vin tag. There is a small dent/ding on the hood right by the “R” in Ford, which any body shop could take out.

The color is “poppy red” which is more or less orange, with white pony interior. The engine is a 289 c.i.d. with 271 horse power, with a four speed on the floor manual transmission, with front wheel disk brakes.

The car runs great, and looks great. However it is a 41 year old car, and could use some restoration. More pictures are available, or if you need specific pictures taken, let me know.

??? Has the vin on this car changed?? According to the ad, the build date is 18Q which is March 18, 1965 (which is still pre-GT). Interestingly enough, in the 3rd edition of the "K Bible" it sits between 2 03K unit numbers which is October 3, 1964 as stated. So has the seller put down the wrong Date code? I'm confused as to how someone could put in wrong numbers in an ad.

Here's the question I asked the seller on Ebay:

<font color=red>Is the data plate number (63B 3 F6 18Q 72E 5) correct? The vin number 5R09K143918 suggests this car was built in March 18, 1965 but the unit number 143918 falls between 2 known 03K cars which were built in October 3, 1964. Can you please clear this up before I bid. Also, is this car a genuine GT? The dates would suggest it's not.</font id=red>

    Here's the reply I got:

<font color=red>im pretty sure this one was built in the later part of 64 so october sounds right. This is a true gt, right down to the holes for the fog lights. everything matches up.</font id=red>

Something just doesn't sit right with this car, it appears the seller has no clue about this car.

    Regards,

    René

  • Clearly this car is misrepresented, either because the owner doesn't know, although he apparently works for a big car dealer, or wants the car to seem something it isn't. There are obvious discrepencies that have already been discussed and others that I am suspicious about but since I can't examine the car in person I won't get into it. Anyone interested in buying this car should have it examined and appraised by someone knowledgable about Mustangs and not accept what the seller says without verification, but's that's always true when buying an expensive collector car. Since the car is an older resoration I would want to know just what's there and what was done, there are some questions about that I'd want answered. This may be a case of an older restortion not done very well or correctly that actually lessens the value of the car, compared to what it would be had nothing been done, to me anyway.

Hey Gerald, maybe we need to start an "October Poppy Red Hipo Fastback" clique. Your car is one of my faves! <img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> We won't include this particular "pretender" car...

Production for the GTs started with build dates of late feb. 65. They were not released (available for sale) until the 1-year 'april' anniv.

  • Amazing... this car was for sale up here in Spokane about two years ago. I know cuz I went to look at it. Same VIN and everything. Yes there are a MILLION red flags with this car, not to mention the rear quarters both have been patched and terribly at that, and the underside of the car has some really wierd funky welding in places. I couldnt ever determine the situation but like the rear of the car was completely rusted out so they used a donor rear floor from about passenger seat area back...

Its ok if things like this need to be done, but would rather have it done professionally, and not in the garage of those two guys on the "That thing got a Hemi???" commercials...
