power steering option on "K" code car

No power steering, power brakes, or air conditioning with the "power engine" option.

No power brakes? Aren't front disk brakes power breaks? Probably a stupid question, so sorry 'bout that chief.

Disc brakes did not have power assist until 1967 on Mustangs. The disc brake master cylinder does not clear the shock tower brace with the Mustang power brake setup. I have added power disc brakes on a 66 Mustang with the Mustang setup and needed to use an export brace to clear the master cylinder. Even then the master cylinder cap still rubbed on the brace. There are aftermarket power brake systems on the market now that will clear even a dual master cylinder on an early Mustang. I have installed these with good success.

  • My July 1965 built K Convertible HAS what I think are factory installed Power drum brakes, my Brother-in-Law bought the car from a used car lot in 1972 way before anyone was tinkering or restoring these kars.

There was some descussion a while back about this, and anouther member here said he was VERY sure his fastback came with the same setup.

  • Hi Guys!I know this is a little after the fact but,The very first K code was Henry Ford's personal K coupe.According to NPD's facts on the car it had a custom scattershield, leather type pre-pony interior,AND POWER DISC brakes,AND power steering!?with a Ford type pump.Who's to say they never did anything,SHELBY himself installed AC units on at least 2 HERTZ cars, and some of the 66 converts he made!?Who knows! It's definately too bad FORD didn't take some clues from Henry himself.I will never understand why they spent all the money on the K motor on my car and ordered the ultra crappy drum brakes!?

Think comparing what the factory did to Shelby modifying a handful of C code convertibles is a bit of a stretch ;)

Which 2 Hertz cars got AC?

  • Great picture, Bob! All those belts and accessories make for an interesting visual study, but I really wonder how well they would perform above 6000 RPM's...

  • Yikes - Pulley Madness! Looks like something from the late 70s. I think that all the extra crap really takes away from the performance image, in addition to robbing power. No wonder they didn't go ahead with it. The Hipo wasn't meant to be a "Luxury Performance" option.
