synthetic oil

  • There was a good thread (or two) awhile back about synthetic oil, viscosity, etc. It was very informative, and had some links to outside sites, where a lot of the mysteries were cleared up.

Anyone know where this topic went?

How do people feel about using synthetiK oil ???

Does it matter if your rear main seal has ben replaced w/ the rubber seal over the old rope seal?..

My Kar doesn't leak or use a drop now that I've replaced the old rope seal w/ the new type, but I still use std. 10W-30 petro oil.

What if I went to 5W-30 or even 5W-20 synthetic?

    Opinions...facts...theories...science..???

  • I have used synthetic oil in my hipo for many years, probably fifteen years with nothing but good luck. used Mobil 1 until the last year or so, now used Shell rotella 10/40 synthetic for trucks. There is some interesting reading on the net about various oils and their use with flat tappet cams. Too long to explain but you might be interested in what has been removed from automotive oil in the past year or two. The HD truck oil still has some chemicals that work well with flat tappets. Just FYI

ck. out this page from Mobil 1

.It appears they have "reformulated" the Mobil 1 15W-50. And this would seem to benefit the "flat tappet" crowd.

Why are you reintroducing Mobil 1 15W-50? Have there been any changes to the formulation, or is it identical to the previous product?

Mobil 1 15W-50 is being reintroduced based on popular demand. Mobil 1 15W-50 provides higher viscosity, designed to provide extra protection for performance vehicles and vehicles that operate in severe service, such as towing, hauling and racing. Additionally, Mobil 1 15W-50 contains higher levels of anti-wear (ZDDP or Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate) that may be required for certain racing applications and camshaft designs. This is a new Mobil 1 15W-50 formulation and is not the same as the product that was marketed a few years ago.

Those threads didn't go anywhere...everything on this site is still intact, but old topics automatically go into the site Archives if new posts aren't made within 6 months. Use the ADVANCED SEARCH feature and type "synthetic oil". Don't forget to check the ARCHIVES box when doing searches. Here's just a few links that come up using the Search feature:

  • There has been a lot writen about oil & flat tappet cams. Has anyone experienced a cam shaft failure (after correct new camshaft break in procedure) due to the type of oil used in their 289 Hipo?

  • Per the Mustang manual always used 10w 30. Recently switched over to 10w 30 Mobil 1 synthetic for better protection. Never had an oil related problem and no leaks after switching to synthetic. Ed

  • The "Bob Is The Oil Guy" website has a ton of info on oil formulations and how the changes affect flat tappet cams. A lot of stuff there but well worth reading. I'm glad to hear Mobil-1 hasn't forgotten about us flat tappet people and reformulated some of their oil with higher ZDDP.

DOES ANY ONE USE SYNTHETIC GEAR OIL IN A TOP LOADER OR REAR END.IF SO WHAT TYPE.

I've use Redline in my trans and rear end for years.

  • I use Mobil Gear oil in my 9 inch rear end in addition to using it in the transmission. Have a 66 "C" code Mustang and have used Mobil 1 gear oil in the 8 inch on for years. It foams less, and never ever has spewed any out of the vent tube even in very cold weather, which is exactly what dino gear lube did. I use it on the hypoid gear on a couple of shaft drive motorcycles as well and sometimes fly a little plane that has synthetic gear oil in the speed reducer that drives the prop. I am sold on the stuff needless to say.

  • And for those of you who are recent members, or new to these kind of forums, there is a silent killer of engines working its way into the shelves of your local " oil supply " store. For emmisions sake, the reformulation of nearly everything from the majors is lacking essential ingredients that prevent older, [and even some newer! ] engines from failure, esspecially the cams. Some of the treads explain it I think, but do your homework, cause you have been warned!!! ps, I uses it on my hair, too!! no, just kidding, but I'm a confirmed AMSOIL user.

  • Does/has anyone run a 15-50 weight oil (synthetic or Dino)in their car? I have never run more than a 10-40 in mine over the years but the reformulated Mobil 1 does have me interested.

    Jack

  • Several threads above recommended NOT using synthetic oil with engines logging less than 10,000 miles. My engine has maybe a 100 miles and may never reach the 10K mark. What's plan B ?

I'm using it ( the 15W-50 Mobil 1 synthetic ). Can't tell any different in oil pressure. No new oil leaks, etc.

  • Crane Cams doesn't recommend synthetic oils because they are so slippery that the lifters don't spin as they should.

I'm currently using Mobil 1 10-30 and was considering changing back to dino oil.
