$55.1K with reserve not met. This car was offered to me in 2003 for $42K, which I thought at the time was a bit much. I don't believe the ebay bids got out of the $30Ks that same year. With tough economic times now and ahead, it's good to see that these cars retain and are gaining in value.

    Comments:

1965 Ford Mustang K-code 289/271 horsepower 4-speed Convertible in beautiful Vintage Burgundy with a Palomino tan bucket seat Pony interior, white convertible power top, white side stripes, and chrome Rallye wheels. Gorgeous condition, matching numbers car from California with only 57,793 miles!! The original solid lifter 289/271 horse engine has no modifications from factory stock and is still fitted with the correct dual-point distributor, correct 20-casting HiPo heads, correct HiPo exhaust manifolds, correct Motorcraft dual accelerator pump 4-barrel carburetor, and correct open element aircleaner assembly. Fires right up and settles into a lopey idle with a deep aggressive exhaust note and the gentle ticking of the solid lifters. Pulls hard through the rev range and runs like a K-code should. Will spin the tires with the throttle in first & second gears and the four barrel carb howls when you floor it in third & fourth. Runs nicely on pump gas and there are no mechanical issues; no smoke, no leaks, no noises. These engines were factory rated at 271 horsepower but Carrol Shelby rated them at 306 horsepower when installed in his GT350s. In fact, these K-code Mustangs are virtually identical to Shelby GT350s but with a smoother ride (softer springs & shocks). The 4-speed transmission shifts perfectly with excellent synchronizers & no gear whine, the factory 9" 3.50 positraction rearend provides a nice balance between relaxed cruising and powerful acceleration, and a new clutch, pressure plate, & throw out bearing have just been installed. Factory disc brakes for safe stops and factory quick-ratio 16:1 steering box. Deluxe Pony interior in correct Palomino Tan with the full length center console and woodgrain dash. Factory 140 mph speedometer, factory Rallye gauges for Oil Pressure, Water Temperature, and Amps, and factory Rallye Pak with the 8000 RPM tachometer (K-code only) & clock. Very nice factory woodgrain three spoke steering wheel. Excellent dash with no warping and no sunfade on the gauges. Excellent center console with no pitting and no scratches. Excellent seats front & rear, excellent carpets, excellent inner door panels. Factory AM radio still in place. Dual side mirrors with remote for the driver. Factory Day/Nite rear view mirror. Extremely nice body with no dents, no dings, no waves, and I cannot find any body filler or any patch panels anywhere. All panels fit perfectly and all gaps are factory perfect. Extremely nice paint in correct Vintage Burgundy done in modern base/clear acrylic urethane, block sanded to a smooth finish, and repeatedly buffed to a brilliant shine. White convertible top in excellent condition (less than 2 years old); goes up & down smoothly & quickly when you press the button and the snap on factory parade cover is included. Excellent chrome bumpers front & rear, excellent chrome door handles, excellent chrome tail lights, excellent brightwork & trim. Factory GT foglights and through the valence trumpet exhaust tips. Quick-ratio (16:1) steering box. Correct white side stripes. Factory chrome Rallye wheels fitted with period correct white wall radials. The trunk contains the spare tire, jack assembly, and trunk mat. Just professionally detailed, polished, hand waxed, and turn key ready for cruises and shows. Runs & drives beautifully. VERY NICE CAR!!<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana" size=2 id=quote>

I forgot about the fender badge holes and quarter trim. I can't take off too many parts because the car is very nicely restored. I've owned 2 GT clones in the past and would eventually like to own a "factory" GT.

The car does have deluxe interior and disc brakes. So the only areas that I could confirm are the punched fog lamp wire holes in the radiator support and maybe the "D" fog switch hole.

I plan to look at a Dearborn '65 K GT in a couple of weeks. Build date is mid-June 1965. Is it possible to confirm GT status without removing the 5-gauge instrument cluster? Can you feel or see with a mirror the contour and lip from underneath the dash?

I'm assuming that the fog lamp switch hole is "D" shaped on a late '65 build and should be easy to see with the switch loosened.

I replaced mine several years ago on the Aug '64 car. I used a VA Mustang supplied Scott Drake handle. Hole was on the wrong side. I sent it back for another, same problem. I drilled a new hole in the correct spot and carefully filled the other hole with J-B Weld. A touch-up with gloss black paint looked really good. I had planned on replacing the handle with a correctly drilled hole later, but with the touch-up the original hole is almost impossible to see.

I looked at this car about three years ago, before the "restoration". It had the smaller non-K code floorpan axle bumper with a snubber and no hole for the choke cable- possible rebody?

Driver's side VIN appeared hand stamped. Rear frame rails had welds and some rust holes. Drilled holes for the GT Foglamps. Never checked the VIN on engine or transmission. Most of external K engine components were there, block was painted black then. Foglamp switch was still between the ignition and lighter.

I've always wanted a '65 Rangoon red K convertible. My current '65 convertible's Wimbledon white is a nice color, but I sometimes feel I would enjoy the car more if it was red. A color change repaint at this stage would be expensive, plus I wouldn't want to destroy the car's history by changing colors from the original door dataplate. So for now I need to learn to love white and maybe a Rangoon red one will come my way.

What I find interesting with the ticket auction is his remorse over cutting the car up back then, before he knew what a K code was worth. But, he said he "removed the tinted glass" just two years ago.

And what about the A/C and P/S?
