shipping to australia....

  • I may be getting ahead of myself, but I have some wheels on E-bay and have a bidder from Australia. I had a prior item and was asked at that time if I would ship there but I declined because of what I thought would be a major hassle.

So the question is how hard is it to ship out of country?

How is the currency exchange handled?

Tell me how it has worked for you.

  • I'm from Australia and have bought wheels through this site. I can't speak for how the shipping was handled, but I payed for the wheels with Paypal.

I bought the wheels from Steve. His username is 65gt. Drop him a line, I'm sure he'll give you all the info you need.

  • Hi,

I shipped a 65 speedometer in kilometers to Australia

and it was very easy. Check with the postoffice/UPS how

much it will cost, agree with the buyer who pays the

PayPal fee. Send the total cost to the buyer and ask him to

pay by PayPal in US$. After money is received just ship the stuff.

Please be aware that if shipped by post, it can't be traced

which made my buyer a bit worried but it showed up in Australia

    in about two weeks.

    Good luck,

    /Bo

  • having bought several mustang parts on ebay and parts places as long as we Aussies have a tracking number from the carrier ( i.e. US post or Fedex ect no problem) My only criticism is that shipping out of the US is sometimes more that the item cost.

  • I was the one who bought the kmh speedo from Bo & it was the first thing I had bought internationally. Bo made it easy & it arrived safe & sound (even though I probably drove him crazy with emails). Since then I've bought a heap of stuff from the US & Europe with no problems. I usually get a USPS tracking number but the item can sometimes arrive before the USPS tracking function knows it's left the USA!

I personally really appreciate you US guys going to the extra trouble to ship O'seas when it would be easier to just sell locally - thanks.<img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • It really should only be a minor inconvenience to ship out of the states. All you need to do is fill out a customs declaration form.

In spite of the high cost of shipping by USPS it is cheaper than UPS or FedEx. Those buggers charge a high brokers fee to ship to Canada while Canada Post only charges a flat $5 fee.

  • I shipped 5 styled steel wheels to Rene in Australia. Rene did all the work arranging the shipment, making it easy for me. Nothing too difficult, just a couple extra forms and lots more money.

  • I've sold 3 cars, 57 Nomad, 65 Mustang Fastback and a 65 K code coupe and some parts to some mates in OZ. PayPal works (does the currency conversion) or I have the money wired directly into my bank account ($12 bank fee). Buyer, or Buyer's bank does the currency conversion. In addition to providing my account number and my banks routing number, I provide the Buyer with a telephone number at my bank in case the Buyer or Buyer's bank has a question regarding the wire transfer.

I usually tell the buyers that as long as I receive payment, I will keep the car or parts for them as long as they need me to. (I also keep the cars insured until they are picked up by the transport company!) I do this for the buyers because it is cheaper for the buyers to fill a shipping container, then to ship each item separately.

Sometimes overseas Buyers come over to the US and spend a month buying cars and parts to fill one or more containers. So if your buyer is doing this, you might want to tell him what else you and your mates have for sale.

One of the mustangs I sold currently is in China, as the container is being taken off of one ship and will be loaded on another ship. Apparently this is not unusal when the car is being shipped from the East Coast.

If you are selling on EBAY and want to sell to OZ, make sure your bidding requirements doesn't block international bidders. Sometimes they snipe (bid the last few seconds)and they won't be able to if you have them blocked, which means less $ to you.

    Remember for OZ contacts:

    Boot = trunk

    Bonnet = hood

I'm sure some of the OZ members can add to this list!

If you ship a car, you will need to provide a title in your name. I also do a bill of sale. You will have to provide your SSN on the export paperwork. So don't be surprised when whoever is doing the export paperwork asks for you SSN. It is required by Federal Law.

  • I've sold on Ebay to out of the country including to Australia. But there is some risk in doing so. Many Ebay sellers state in their ad that they won't sell outside the USA. They have had problems in the past and don't want to take the chance.

One problem is payment. PayPal seems safe but a PayPal payment by credit card can be canceled by the buyer or a stolen credit card might be used. PayPal will then charge the amount back to the seller. This might take a couple of months so if the seller has already shipped, he's out his item and the money. It does happen. I've accepted PayPal for smaller amounts with agreement to wait at least a month, usually stretched it out to two, before I shipped just to make sure the payment would not get canceled.

Cashier's checks can be forged. Not a good idea to take a cashier's check unless you know the seller and know the check is good. I only do it for local buyers where I can take it to the buyer's bank and get it converted to cash or bank check.

The safe payment method is by wire transfer, bank to bank. The buyer's bank will only transfer the money to the seller's bank when they have guaranteed funds. Once the money is in the seller's bank account, it can't be taken back. So you're safe to ship once you have verified that the funds are in your account. The buyer and his bank will work out the currency exchange so your bank will receive the amount of the sale in dollars.

Be sure when quoting the total price, to include all fees (don't forget the PayPal charges) and shipping costs so you don't shortchange yourself. It's easier to get the full payment at one time so you don't have to go back and get more if you don't calculate right.

You can get shipping quotes when you know where the item is going and how you are shipping.

For cars, let the buyer make all the shipping arrangements. Buyers in Australia know how to get cars shipped from the States to them. They can have the car picked up at the seller's house and taken to the shipping company. They will pay all the costs directly to the transporter and shipper.
