Brake Handle Replacement

  • Anybody out there that has replaced the parking brake handle please give us some insight on how to get handle off and replace with new one?

  • Or cut the handle off with a hacksaw blade or Dremel and remove the pin with a pair of vise grips!<img src=images/icon_smile_dead.gif border=0 align=middle>

    It's actually very easy.

The handle is held on with a pin. Punch the pin through and pull the handle off.

Replacing it is just as easy.

Mine was less than easy, I had to cut it off with a Dremel. Getting it on was easier after I drilled a hole in the handle on the correct side <img src=images/icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle>

Punching the pin in is the easy way but often things get messed up and that doesn't work, then it's cutting time.

Rene brings up a good point, some of the repop handles have the hole for the pin drilled on the wrong side. NOS may not be any better, I have three NOS handles and none have a hole, you must drill your own.

  • I have four loose: one still mounted on its shaft that came off a 66 San Jose hardtop and the pin comes in from the left (long arm side of the handle); two out of bag (I assume they are aftermarket) and the pins come in from the right; and one Ford NOS, C0DZ-2768-B, still sealed in the bag with no hole. It has a code 'Q29AA' on the bag but I don't think that it is a date code. On the hole for the shaft, there is a slot (key slot?) that is in the same place, 45 degs down on the left side, on all four. The only other feature is an alignment hole on the left inside of the handle.

On the one car I can get to, a 65 San Jose Fastback, the pin comes in from the right. I know it's an original. The white is gone from 'BRAKE'.

    lol...I guess I got lucky.

I used a Scott Drake repop and it went on as easy os the old original came off.

That's odd. I also got a Scott Drake and it had the hole on the wrong side. Go figure??

  • I replaced mine several years ago on the Aug '64 car. I used a VA Mustang supplied Scott Drake handle. Hole was on the wrong side. I sent it back for another, same problem. I drilled a new hole in the correct spot and carefully filled the other hole with J-B Weld. A touch-up with gloss black paint looked really good. I had planned on replacing the handle with a correctly drilled hole later, but with the touch-up the original hole is almost impossible to see.
