Arvinode system reproduction

  • If anyone in Dallas installs this please contact me as I have an Arvin car with the GT exhaust currently installed. I'd be interested to hear the difference.

I believe that there were two types of Arvinode hangers used, as seen in the two drawings below. The ones like mine clamp to the horizontal section of the pipe, and the other to the vertical section.

My March 30th Metuchen A code GT had the ones seen in the picture when I bought it seven years ago. It still has the factory H pipe and clamps, but the mufflers had been replaced with long tubular mufflers that looked just like glasspacks, but they used metal baffles instead of glass.

  • You are correct about there being two different hanger types as we confirmed that when we received the Ford engineering drawings. You car would be one of the very few GTs to have been Arvinode equipped before the change over to the standard GT dual system. This is a photo from an ebay auction and these were listed as Arvin parts. Jim Abbott had mentioned these to me and described them as an Arvin over the counter part that could be installed by cutting the rear valence with a template (which is in the Osborn books, also). If your rear hangers and trumpets are consistent with the drawing, and you have the correct clamps, this would confirm your Arvinode-equipped GT status, indeed rare. Beside production dates, the evidence of the hangers seems to be the best way to confirm an Arvinode system having been present at one time. Your car is the first we have seen with the later style horizontal clamp.

Interestingly, I have one of each of the floor hangers, both NOS.

Why am I not surprised Charles! [Blocked Image: http://i38.tinypic.com/2zqvllj.jpg]

I've also added a pic of the replacement mufflers that were on the car. They look like glasspacks, but they have full steel baffles inside with no glass.

Looks like you still have the original side-tab H pipe, but the glass packs and clamps are aftermarket.

The mufflers are actually not glasspacks, but have full steel baffles inside. For sure they are replacements, but they did sound very nice.

Although it's been a few years since I checked, I believe the clamps at the H pipe to be original 5252 Ford production clamps...

  • Then this poses an interesting question; what do they look like internally? Do you mean louvers like we have in the examples above? It would be worth a shot of the internals to see how they are configured. Your rear exhaust hangers are in great condition, and if those are original clamps then there's another mystery to unravel in the front mufflers; who made them, etc. I haven't found any aftermarket baffled units (yet) in the reaearch, but there's always a first time...

Here you can see some of the baffle material on the one I mangled

Here you can see a bit better how the two perforated stampings touched in the middle to form a type of X the length of the muffler. Looks like two chambers, with the gasses forced through the perforations to exit the bottom half at the other end?

Here is a sample of what I believe to be the original metallic redish brown paint.

Here is a quick sketch of what the baffle looked like.

  • I sold autoparts in high school in late '79 & '80 - at the same time I aquired my HiPo.

That red/brown color looks very familiar. We sold Walker Exhaust products at HiLo Auto Parts in Houston, Texas - that color looks like the same one used on the Walker performance mufflers we stocked.

I didn't run them and don't remeber what they looked like inside - but do remeber the color - I always thought they were weird looking - so unlike the Thrush and Cherry Bomb colors.

Not sure that will help - but who knows.

  • Can someone tell me the distance from the center of the top rear shackle bolt to the center of the top rear tail pipe hanger hole in the rear frame rail? Same distance on both frame rails I assume? I am restoring my early October '64 K fastback and would like to put the Arvinode system on it. Thanks.

  • Hello all...I tried reading through everything here...but still cant figure out....is any of this correct for a late 66 shelby??? Have all the NOS hangers and clamps for the exhaust but no exhaust.....not sure what to do or what is correct???

  • Rode in a "Node".

Dave was kind enough to rescue me from a rental car and offered a ride in his Vintage Burgandy K fastback on the "Pony Run" up a mountain outside of Park City, Utah at the MCA Grand National Show. I quickly accepted and was excited when I found out that he has one of the newest Arvinode exhaust systems on his car. I was somewhat concerned how his car would do at 11,500 feet, but it performed flawlessly. The "node" was relatively quiet at cruising speeds but came to life as he went throught the gears. It has a performance car sound to it and was one that I would be proud to have on my K car. I don't think anybody would be disappointed with it. By the way, you can hear it on UTube by searching for "round2k"

Thanks to Dave for rescuing me from a rental car!!!!

  • This is absolutely great news for those of you that have Kars built from October 1964 to March 1965!!!

What do I do with my JULY 1965 Dearborn Kar?--is this easier to do with reporduction parts than the earlier exhaust? and what about the GT trumpets? how far should they stick through the trim rings? many I've seen at the shows are seemingly too far out and some are barely flush with the rings, I have a copy of the original dealer brochure that shows them out quite a bit.
