Repo rally pac

  • I put one of the repro Rally Pacs on my 65 GT (non-HP) that I got from NPD and I have no complaints. The tach wires up exactly the same as the original one (just like on my HP) and the rest of the wiring is the same as stock but the clock is a crystal controled (Whatever it is) type.

Do you know how to tell if a Rally Pac is original? The clock don't work.

    That's a pretty good one <img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> ...Mine's original and the clock <i>still</i> works!

  • Same here - my original "TICKS" as it should. The "electronic" replacement movements don't tick and the second hand moves smoothly - the original mechanical movements make a noticeable "tick' and the second hand pulses - just like my Granddads old pocket watch!

I have never installed a repop pac, but Mustang Monthly recently did an article on them - seems like they said it DID NOT wire up exactly like the originals. I seem to remember something about the tach being a different movement and requiring a direct connection to the coil. You might try to search their website for a copy of the article.

  • The one I got from NPD hooked up under the dash in the resistance wire circuit, not to the coil direct. It surprised me because one other car has the tach-coil wire requirement.

That is how the originals connected. You will fry the tach if it is not connected through the resistor.

  • I installed a Repo RP on my car as well. Blue Oval, complete with Ford on the face / 8k version. Looks great but I haven't compared it to an original. The first one I installed had a problem with the tach, it wouldn't go over 2500 RPM. Replaced under warranty no problem. Replacement works great.

  • To be honest I'm just good at following directions (and they were poorly done). However, that being said I did no wiring to the engine bay, only plugged in where the directions dictated beneath the dash and into the door open light on switch in the front of the door jam. I believe I saw the article in Mustang Monthly or Fast Ford and my install was different with zero wires being run into the engine bay.

    Hope that helps.

Excuse me for beating a dead horse, but the NPD listing for the repro Rally Pac flatly states that the '65 style connects like the original, but says the '66 "connects to the coil", whatever that means! So....does anyone have a '66 low profile repro Rally Pac and can report on how it is wired?

  • You may find that the easiest solution is to get a copy of the Ford Electrical Assembly Manual by Osborn. There are illustrations that show where the loom connection points are, and they call out the color codes. It will save you a lot of brain damage.

  • Actually the NPD catalog (2007 pg 12) states 'wires through the coil circuit.' I put one of them, a 6,000 rpm version, on my 65, a non-'K' car, and it looks like, and wires like the original that's on my 'K' car. You disconnect the bullet connector of red wire from the ignition switch to the resistance wire and plug in the appropiate Rally Pac tach wires. Works fine.

OK, my last try, I promise. Is the one you installed the '65 style or the '66 style?

    TIA

  • I have a 8K high profile (1965) repop in my car, wiring like the original,has Mustang on the tach. Looks & works great.....<img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • if you purchase the scott drake low profile rally pac it does require a wire to run to the negative side of the ignition coil in the engine compartment. this is not so good for concourse but excellent if you have an aftermarket electronic ignition..

It is what is refered to as the 65-66 style, aka low profile and looking back on my previous posts, I see I did not state what style I had. My 65 GT is a May build and that was the correct one.

Ok, now I'm confused. You are saying the scott drake pacs require a wire run to the coil where everyone else is saying they plug into the factory harness. Is yours one of the old repros or the later ones? I'm not in the market since I have my original pac in the car, just asking for future reference....
