5R07K Koupe project

  • Here are some pics of my project Kar I purchased a few months back. It was amazing to find pics of the Kar from earlier for sale listings on this site. So here are some pics from the first sale. [Blocked Image: http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z466/GMeindl/5R07K166988-1.jpg?t%201295621588]

The Kar is currently on the frame machine. Work has begun to repair all the " restoration " work performed by the previous three owners. I wish they hadn't touched the kar. It has been weeks of going backwards trying to figure out a plan of attack and removing poor work. I have been lucky enough to have purchased original and NOS parts for the Kar so that we have now begun to put it back together. First up was pull the bent front frame rail and make sure the Kar was square. A new floor pan will have to be installed and that is up next. A NOS tailight panel will also be going in and a takeoff radiator support from a parts car. All of the junk aftermarket parts have been removed, hood, fenders, radiator support ( that was tacked in ) and rusted out doors. The trunk lid is original to the Kar and the Ivy Green paint is visible !

The vin#'s are intact and a the tell tale K code signs are there. I am off to the Big E this weekend for the swap meet to try to find more pieces and will post some more pics when I get them this weekend.

  • Good luck with your project. I hope you get to finish it. It looks like a handful.<img src=images/icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Hey Greg,

Tell me about the big E swap. I have been there in the summer(and that was a while back) but never heard of a winter swap. Is it worth the trip...?

    mike

  • The Big E is the Eastern States Exposition, Massachusets

( http://www.thebige.com ) is 10-7pm. My vintage racing friends have apparently been going there for years.Went to Lebanon Speedway recently to try to find parts and froze !!!!

I had dropped out of vintage racing really since 2001 and have recently dove head first back in since summer 2009 again. Now here I am restoring this K code with the help of this website. I bought the red K code racecar in 1998 and raced it hard and often till I went Motorola Cup/ Grand Am Cup racing in a 1995 Cobra R mustang. Then went SCCA Nationals in a few cars untilJune 2009 Brion of Brion's Restorations dragged me back in. Funny part is he is a corvette guy that is swamped with mustangs !!! Glad to be back vintage racing and having more fun than ever.

Mayeb we can get you all to bring some Kars out for Sunday in the Park at Lime Rock Labor Day weekend ? I will be racing the red 65 K and with any luck driving the green K Code coupe...... or Brion will be pushing me !!!!

I am on the hunt for everyting to make this car whole again. Thanks to this site I have been able to gain the knowledge to find the correct pieces. I still have tons of questions to be answered.......

  • I just received my Rally-Pac back from H & H Electrical http://www.tachman.com/ and they did an amazing job. The unit I have is a dealer installed unit. It say's " Ford" on the dial face and does not say "Rally-Pac " in the middle. According to Gary this is more rare than factory installed. Factory installed says " Mustang " and has " Rally-Pac" in the middle.

They stay in contact with you during the process and actually sent me pictures of it on the bench being calibrated showing different Rpm levels. They also did a new Krinkel finish as someone way back peeled it off to expose the chrome lids.

Here's the before. [Blocked Image: http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z466/GMeindl/IMG_4431.jpg?t%201296000683]

And here's the finished product. These are his pics that he Gary you as they worked on it. Great service and communication.

  • Gary from H&H is one of the very best in the business. He restored my non functional Rally Pac probably going on 6 years ago now and it still looks and performs perfectly. He remains highly recommended.

  • Gary also recently restored my low profile unit. Paint, re-cal tach, quartz clock, new lenses, new trim rings and buttons. It will run you about $500. Very pleased with the workmanship.

  • The front end work is done

We used a radiator support from a donor car out back. Trying to use original sheetmetal when possible.

The Kar is on the Continental frame machine and is straight as the day it left San Jose. Thats the measuring chart on the front of the radiator support. The chart was made way back in the day by the frame machine company and it is written by hand by them. They took a Kar and measure it for Brion to create the chart.

Brion promised it would be done any day !! LOL

    Here's the underside

You can still see the bare spots on the frame where the paint didn't get when at the factory. The black underside was an interesting find as well. The vin #'s are all intact and all the dates match up correctly.

The bracket inside the dash cluster opening was cut and my only guess is for a large tach ? Any idea's why this would have been done ?

  • The drawing was done by Continental themselves and is metric in millimeters / centimeters. This chart was done by hand by the manufacturer measuring a car specifically for Brion of Brion's Restorations at a time when they didn't have a full catalog of charts available. I believe it may even be specific to their machines design. There are standard ones available for the body shop industry. When I reskinned my 1995 Cobra R after a horrific 2001 crash at VIR in Grand Am Cup we measured by hand using a chart we paid $60 for.

  • I have never actually looked at the wheels until now but they appear to be argent. I never planned on using these as I have a new set of American Racing Torque Thrust wheels with the steel conical sleeve inserts ( ala Cobra Automotive ) for the long racing lugs.

Another tid bit of information on the 12/21/64 Kar :

Front end assembled on 12/2 2nd shift as stamped on the firewall between the tower braces. So I am surprised by the time of assembly to actual production of the vehicle. Any other late 64 SJ builds see this ?

  • I have not figured out what to do in that department yet. I will rely on what information I can glean from the members on this site as to what they have done on kars around my build date of 12/21/64 for San Jose.

    Greg,

The build date for my car was scheduled for 10/29/64...Latest sheet metal stamping I have found has been around 10/21/64. I do know the car was sold on 11/6/64 according to the owners manual. So they rushed to put it together I think...

  • Greg,

Your car is in the timeframe that the Arvinode exhaust system was used. If you do a search on Arvinode Exhaust you will find a lot of research information about it and about the development of a replacement system from Waldron Antique Exhaust that was put on the market not too long ago. I have the system on my Koupe and am very happy with the sound. They offer a concourse and a standard system.
