Charles,

    As usual, great stuff!

  • Charles,

Do you plan to restore those original control arms? If so, how will you proceed? I'm not aware of any quality lower ball joints available unless you removed them from a Moog complete arm. Also, I would be interested in how the rivets could be properly and accurately attached.

    Thanks again,

    Brant

  • I'm not really sure what I'll do at this point. The uppers were beat to hell when someone replaced the ball joints. It's a shame, too, because the uppers are pretty much free of any pitting. I'm wondering if a metal man could fix the chisel marks by grinding burs down smooth and maybe welding up divots?

On the LCA's, I could probably remove the jack tabs from the NOS ones and replace with correct style. Regarding the rivets, not sure how to go about that,

Frustrating that there is so much variance in service parts and even factory line parts.

You gotta admit the date codes on the upper and lower control arms is cool though. Who would have though that?!

Yes, this definitely could be done. It just takes a lot of time.

Yes, I never noticed this until you pointed it out.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to more updates.

It's so great to be able see such a well documented description of your best restoration to date unfolding before our eyes. Yes, place called Surtronics, here in Raleigh.

  • I know, I know... Had a bit of a lull there in July. 2 vacations, MCA national show here in Raleigh. I've been getting back on it though. Will have some new posts this week.

    Sorry to keep you hanging!

BTW, unfortunately I haven't located a plater yet that will do small lots of galvanized (in reference to your floor drain plates). I'm still looking though!

Charles, Your phosphate effort looks darn good. Where did you source the solution from?

There's a pic of the phosphate solution label in the blog. Ordered it online from a place called midwayusa.

  • I currently use E-Phos 630 from Electrochemical Products, Inc. http://www.epi.com/ I have my plater order it for me as there are some nasty regulations about the use of this type of product. When done with a batch of solution, I pour it into another container and mix in some Arm and Hammer Baking Soda to neutualize it. If you are thinking about a bit of do it yourself, this is acid and even diluted, can cause burns. I've been doing this about 15 years now and have been lucky.

I see that on the engine side of the firewall there is no sound deadener around the heater hole etc, do you plan to replace this?

On my car just above the heater hole there is a huge long sag in the paint, was this seen on cars ? or should I remove it when I detail the engine bay?

    Thanks
