DeLuxe Remote Mirrors

  • My reproduction remote deluxe mirror on the drivers side and its non-remote mate on the passenger side were supoesedly installed using the template (which I don't have)and from where they are mounted the vent windows hit them and will not open, my restorer seems to feel that the reproduction mirrors are thicker (the actual mirror head)than the originals and the template IS copied from the originals-I'm thinking I can move both of my mirrors back towards the rear of the car about 1/2" so the vent window will clear and I can see in the mirror better???

  • I replaced the two standard outside mirrors on my 66 Hardtop with the adjustable LH and matching RH without a template. I used the old eye-ball and opened the vent to make sure they cleared. They were located about three inches further back than the standard ones if I remember. I used a plastic cup washer and screw to fill in the old holes, one on each side, the rear hole was covered by the new mirrors. To relocate the LH mirror further to the rear, you will need to make the control cable hole either an 'oval' shape or make a new one. Take the LH one off and see what you need to do.

  • Jim, This is good info!! Thanks!! I am going to remove the LH mirror and take a look......can you please tell me how to remove it?? looks like there are 2 screwa?? 1 looks like I'd need to use an ofset phillips screwdriver?? or does the mirror head come off by itself first?? please excuse my ignorence but I have never operated on these mirrors before.Rick

  • An offset Phillips head screwdriver will work, I just use a regular one. That gets the mirror loose. To remove it completly, you need to remove the two screws that hold the remote control to the door on the inside; using a pair of needle nose pliers, diconnect the three cables that control the mirror - they should be color coded, cable and slot, but I always remark them one stripe, two stripe and no stripe, just to be sure; tie the three cables together with some 1/8 inch dia rope about 3 feet long so you can get the cables back in without taking the door panel off; and then you can remove the mirror completly.

  • Rick, There is a hole in the mirror head to access the rear screw with a regular Phillips screwdriver. All that you need to do is tilt the mirror glass forward at the bottom.

I am seriously considering buying a non remote mirror for the passenger door. Where did you buy yours from and are you happy with the quality? I have an original remote on the drivers door, If you need me to measure anything let me know. Mark

  • Mark, I think my mirrors are Scott Drake reproductions I did not buy them direct-my restorer got them from his wholesale supplier-I understand that they came with a template that is used for proper placement.

I would be interested to know if your remote on the drivers side IS original and how far back from the front edge of the door it is mounted, and if the vent window hits it or not?

My restorer says they used the template that came with the mirrors, but they feel that the repros head is thicker than the originals causing mine to come into contact with the vents.

In the past the RH non-adjustable mirror assembly cost more than the LH remote by as much as $5.00. Blame the laws of supply and demand, and recovering your initial investment. Scott Drake is the current producer but there may be other older ones on shelves. The RH does not have remote control however, it is a dummy. It also is not as useful as you would like as it has a limited field of vision. I placed a 'moon' (convex) mirror on top of the original mirror and that is much better.

    Jim

  • Jim, Be glad that you do not have an original Ford Rotunda mirror as the field of vision on it is totally useless. Ford did not angle the mirror head far enough to the left to be useful for the driver. It does work well for the passenger though. <img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> The reproduction mirrors fixed that problem by slightly twisting the mirror head more to the left to make it useful.

  • Rick, I am not sure exactly where your mirror is mounted but I have found that if you move the mirror base more inboard to the window, it tilts the mirror further away and may fix your problem. This is due to the curvature of the door at the top where the mirrors mount.

  • I bought a new driver side from Mustangs Unlimited about 4 years ago. It was supposed to be the best available. The one I got looked like it was made of plastic and the chrome was brushed on. It was BAD. They exchanged it, saying they shipped the economy one by mistake, which this one would not have passed for the cheap version either. Then they called me and said the next one was not good either so I got a credit and ordered from Year One. It was perfect and had all the markings of my original. I bought the passenger side one about 10 years ago from an older guy that used to travel the swap meets in a motor home. Don't know who made it, but it still looks like it came out of the box.

M/U also supplied me with my tail light lens that were stamped MOFOCO instead of FOMOCO. Funny, but not acceptable.

    The window opens ok.

Is your mirror glass tinted? as mine is

    Mark

Ps I think its an original as its nicely patinated and I have 2 speed wipers and multi speed heater fan which comprised the visibility pack. Fred correct any of this if I am wrong.

  • Cobraboy, Hey, Thanks for the pictures and measurements.

    Fred, Thanks for the suggestion.

I am going out to take a look at mine and measure to see whats going on.

My drivers side remote is semi-ok rear view wise, but the passengers side is worthless right now-I was planning on putting the stick-on convex mirror on IT after all my showing and judging is done when I start driving my car-they really help!

  • I have measured mine and only have about 10 3/4" 11" from the front of the door to the base of the mirror......my mirrors are way forward from what is pictured here....I'm wondering if the installation varied from plant to plant?? all I know is that my vents won't open, and basicly both mirrors are pretty much useless in a driving situation.

I guess there is a fairly large hole for the cable in the door for the left one, and that IT will be the most challenging to move back...I hate drilling more holes but I think the old ones will be covered....

My dad complained that on my Koupe the remote mirror has interfered with the vent window since day one. This is a Metuchen Kar

Mine opens fine, and the remote mirror is factory installed.
