Wanted 65 Hipo axle bumper.

  • Thanks Ralph

I guess we have to remember that these cars were kinda hand built and if the box with rubbers for the body ran dry, and there were 3rd member rubbers available they would be fitted instead.

Thanks for the info Domenic - Mark

I have personally inspected two 66 models that had rubber bumpers bolted both to the body plate and to the rear end plate. It was really an interferance and incorrect to have both but I have heard of others like this as well. My guess would be that it was an assembly line error as the body plate is setup for the upper rubber bumper. An assembly line worker could easily make an error on this being as the K codes were so uncommon.

Is it more correct for a car with a #2 body plate to have a rubber bumper bolted to it ?. If so, does the bumper that is fitted to my 3rd member plate work on the body ? or are they different ?

    Thanks Mark

    Fred - from what plant?

Mark, The rubber bumper bolted to the upper body plate with two bolts is incorrect. That is the 8 inch style. The rubber bumper should only be the C3AA square pyramid shaped bumper with one stud bolted to the axle snubber.

Jeff, The Kars that I saw with two rubber bumpers were both Metucheon units.

  • Thought I would add how my car is setup. My car is a Dearborn car scheduled to be built the last week of March but has many sheet metal stamps up to April 4th. My car came with the GT style dual exhaust, has the HIPO variation # 1 bumper plate and had (has) both an upper and lower rubber bumper on it. The rubbers were (are) both damaged from hitting it other. Near as I can tell the setup appears to be original. I plan to change the exhaust system next week and will most likely remove the upper rubber bumper, and replace the lower bumper. Not sure if it helps anyone but thought I would put the information out there.

  • Just to add to the data base, my kar is a January 11 scheduled build date Dearborn Kar and has the rubber on the axle snubber only and the first bumper plate shown early in this thread.

  • I sure HOPE NOT! Just one more way for somebody to REBODY a used up serial number and DEVALUE our cars!<img src=images/icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • If the snubber plate is the bumper assembly that goes on the axle, I need one and the bumper too, because somebody removed mine from the Kar 'way back when. It's a March 1 Dearborn, so I take it that the bumper is on the axle plate. Anyone have a source for a replacement?

  • Greg:

Thanks for the link. Nice example pictures! In that, however, you state your bumper is appropriate for a June 65 onward Kar. Some items changed as the model year progressed, such as the exhaust system, etc, and March/April appears to have been a change point.

My 3rd edition of Gregory's ref book does not have a picture of the bumper assy. Does anyone out there have a picture of what would be right for a March Kar?
