Wanted 65 Hipo axle bumper.

  • Here is a strange request. I have a chance to buy a 65 Hipo Fastback project car that the owner has cut out the complete floor from the cowl panel to the tail light panel. He tossed away the rusted metal along with the axle bumper that the 3rd member hits. It is attached to the floor as you know. This is all I need. I have been told these were also used on 67 and 68 S code cars.

    Thanks for any leads. Dave

  • WOW someone would really pay $400 for a small piece of sheet metal like that? That sounds like a rip to me but at these prices it won't be long before anybody who's car isn't finished will be parting them out!

  • So what Mustangs are these plates used on?? we all know they are used on '65-'66 Ks, and someone is saying '67-'68 Ss.....I sure couldn't see cutting this plate out of a fairly decent body even if it ment $400.00.

I'm telling you all CONTACT "earlyk" !!

  • Here is an Ebay link to the reproduction bumper plate from Buckeye also known on here as earlyk that 6hypo5conv is referring to:

  • I've seen at least 2 versions of the plate (short and long). It is my understanding that the rear build up was unique to K codes when it was first used in production due to the snubber design, but it carried over to GT A codes since they were also dual exhaust cars.

  • I always thought that this plate was unique to the '65-'66 K code Mustangs only, but I could be wrong....If anyone knows his Ks its Nate, I trust his knoledge and judgement 100%

  • I can get these made exact both the early plate and the later plate all 65/66 GT's K Codes and all dual exhaust Cars upto the 70 boss 302, Mach1 etc have the same plate. If we can get enough interest on these the mold to get them made up cost about 2k and then about 75 bucks a punch. They current one I have is cnc machined and then welded

  • Please read page 87 of the 289 high performance mustang by Tony Gregory. He states in 1965-66 the k model was the only model with the larger 9" assembly. There were two styles of bumper plates welded to the floor pan above the rear axle's nose. this bumper plate was to give the unit something to bump against when hitting potholes and such, other than thin sheet metal. The 9" assembly and the standard 8" assembly each used a different kind of plate. They are shaped distinctively different. On the standard 8'plate, the triangular rubber bumper is mounted on the plate. On the 9" assembly, the rubber bumper is mounted on a shield that is bolted to the axle assembly.the bracket above has no bumper or provision to mount one, via a slot. All k model"s came with the 9" assembly, all k mustang's should have the 9' style plate. In 1967, the 390 was offered with a 9"rear assembly, and obviously came with the 9" style bumper plate.Page 89 top shows the standard bumper plate used on cars with the 8" third member. Bottom of the page shows HiPo variation #1 usually found on early cars through 1965.Page 90 shows HiPo variation #2 usually found on late 65 cars through 1966 and later. In 64 and a half thur 1966 only k code mustang's had this style of plate
