I considered those mufflers with a normal tailpipe system.

  • I'd like to do that setup sometime on my fastback. I have to wait until the kids are older so I don't scare them to death, though. I also wonder just "how loud" they really are and what to do when/if I ever got pulled over. Are these exhaust systems even street legal anymore?

I find it humorous that Jay has a radio with 8 track in his car. As if you could ever hear it over that exhaust note. Must be for when the car is parked only (:

  • In August of 1990 (105 degrees), I drove my 65 Shelby

from Dallas, TX to Denver, CO and I can tell you that though I love to drive the car it's very loud, especially with the windows down.

Some journalist in 1965 said it was like the side exhaust pipes

were attached to his ears. If you decide to go this route with

    your hipo, be prepared.

  • In high school I put 20" Thrush mufflers(if you can call them that) - straight thru glass packs on my hi po. Exhaust was all new front to back with 2 1/4" pipe and a small cross over - the guy had a hell of a time figuring out how to hook up to the "weird" exhaust manifolds that didn't match his bending machine specs for Mustangs - HAHA! Told him it was rare and unique - he didn't believe me!

Dad actually went with me - so I didn't get taken.

Now keep in mind that the pipes went out the back - but it was so loud that my Dad refused to ever ride in the car again!

I blame my current hearing "quality" (or lack of it as my wife points out routinely) on the sound level of my hipo and all of the other race cars I've worked on for 25 odd years.

I can only imagine how much louder the side exhaust is - but the drone at speed is probably close to the same.

The cops didn't like me very much either - never actually got a "noise" ticket but got plenty of road side visits!

I loved the sound regardless and plan on using the Arvinode system when my car gets to that point.

Just like with my Harley - LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES!

  • Years ago I herded around a '69 Vette that had the factory, bone stock side exhaust. The sound was fabulous, but the droning at virtually all speeds was truly difficult to put up with over long distances, not to mention the radio was virtually useless. The ONLY relief came during those infrequent times when one went across an expansion bridge. Then, the sudden silence was remarkable, but short lived.

Great link! Looks like someone "ripped" Jay Leno's original piece, and had to split it into 3 parts to fit on You Tube (with considerable loss of video quality). For those who want to see the original 11 minute video with much better image quality, check it out here:

If you like that one, then you'll like this one too:

  • I have them on my '65 K Fastback and I love em'. They remind me of the new Arvinode System. They have a low growl at idle and are relatively quiet at highway speeds. But when you run through the gears they will make you smile!!!

I highly recommend them. By the way, they are extremely easy to install and if you ever have to take them off (Tranny work, etc) they come loose at the headers and one clamp toward the rear. Thats it...
