• Bought a set of '66 Shelby 10 spokes for my '65 fastback. The size is 14x6.5

My car has had the shelby drop to the front and traction masters on the rear. Don't recall if the rear has been dropped any, probably not.

Looking for a good tire size to use for occasional driving and maybe a trip to a road course once in a while. I'm thinking a 215 would be the best width, but am torn on sidewall size. 65, 70 or 75?

  • in theory, the shorter sidewall would be better for the track because it will flex less. if the car is lowered, you should not need the diameter to fill the wheel wells. if you stay with the 215, the tire height will change as you go from 75/70/65. you should also consider tire width vs. rim width. look at the tire specs at goodyear for example. it will list a tire and suggested rim width range.

  • the height size will be determined by your tire clearance. Many cars will take the 215 size in a 60 series, but the biggest challenge might be tire clearance when making sharp turns. Have your tire dealer mount different size tires for you to actually see them on the car. I've noticed on many early Mustangs that the right side typically has less front tire clearance.

  • I don't know if this helps you at all but on my car I have 18 inch wheels all the way around 18x7 on the front with 235/40zr18, and on the rear I have 18x8 with 245/40zr18. The car has not been lowered and there is no tire rubbing. hope this helps.

  • Charles, this must be your first post seeking information instead of always providing it. I would go the 65 route (:

Charles, Being as you have the Shelby lowered upper control arms, you will have much better tire clearance than a standard Mustang suspension.

  • All this restomod talk prompted me to go look at my kid's 66 hardtop and its got Cooper P225/60R14 all the way around. Of course the rest is pure stock (almost) 'A' code. Sorry, no 'Shelby' drop for reference.

  • Hi Guys

I have 215/60 x 15 front and 235/60 x 15 BF Goodrich tyres fitted to 15 x 7 rally style rims on my k code. The car has the shebly lowered front and have not experienced any tire rub at all and all the body work is untouched.

These wheels fill the wheel well completely and the car handles and drives extremely well. I have kept my original 14in style wheels and will fit some dual redline tyres for show days etc.

    Cheers
