• Going by the sellers logic I actually have a Shelby Mustang that never quite became a Shelby Mustang. Damn, sooo close!!<img src=images/icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • I am certainly no expert on factory markings so this is purely an observation, but I note that it has DSO 26 marked on the diff for some reason yet shows as DSO 15 on the data information - if they are the same piece of info ?

And for almost being a Shelby...looks like it got close as it got COBRA valve covers ???

    Ray

  • Every Shelby built in 1966 started out as a k code 4 speed fastback like this one but this one remained the original.

Gratz to all you almost shelby owners! With that logic I guess my C code was almost a K code, they both have 289's in them!

  • Here is the risk of copying undercarriage details from other cars when you're not sure of the authenticity:

Shelby undercarriage from the HiPo Forum Photos section - note the DSO 26 on the diff:

Image found on ebay car with a DSO 15 data plate and DSO 26 on the diff. Also note the yellow daubs on the springs:

    [Blocked Image: http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/3200/49bd12ph7.jpg]

Shebly undercarriage again, note the driveshaft striping, "3" on the diff tube and yellow daubs on the springs:

Ebay car again, note the driveshaft striping and "3" on the diff tube:

Same story elsewhere on the car.

This is a nice driver, but would not be concours correct without a great deal of work. The undercarriage photos were too fuzzy to make out the details clearly, so determining if the trans or block are VIN stamped isn't possible.

  • If that is the auction car, I wonder if it was sold as "numbers matching"? Being a July car (probably),

I doubt any of those engine components came with that car.

No snubber bumper. What's the deal with the clutch pedal? (it's nearly on floor).

  • The 6B28 heads are Feb of 66 castings and the block is a 5B17 making it Feb of 65, so the seller is incorrect with respect to a matching numbers engine assembly. The engine has a roller chain, and the hatchet weight is likely to be gone. I'd want to know if the engine had been balanced when it was overhauled to make up for the loss of the extra weight. I notified the seller of the discrepancy in the date codes.

The clutch pedal is probably missing a return spring on the fork.

  • The repro door tag that this car has adds to the questionable heritage.

  • The undercarriage was not detailed before the auction. This was definitely done since the auction. The undercarriage shows a lot of older rust pitting along with the attached components such as the rear end housing. The Kar shows its east coast history upon close inspection. There is no picture of a VIN stamp on either the engine or trans. As Dave already posted, the seller states that this is the original engine. This engine block was cast 17 months before the Kar was built. The heads were cast a year later and that was still 5 months prior to the build date. There is also no mention of a trans tag code and the tag is there. The single front California plate was on this Kar prior to the auction. Maybe the Kar was driven through California on a vacation some time in the past. <img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> The eastern auction people love to use the word California whenever they are trying to sell a car on the block.

  • I advised the seller of the issue of the casting dates and he did not respond. Fred is correct with respect to the rust as it's evident in the front suspension photos as well.

  • This Kar was bid to $35,200 which is quite a bit short of the $45,000 that the seller paid for it. It did not meet reserve.
