'65-'66 Dual Redline Tires

  • I have been told by many, and have read recently in Mustang Monthly that US Royal was the ONLY supplier to Ford of these tires back in 1965-66, I understand that the MCA is considering changing the rules soon to include a 2 point deduction for incorrect brand of tire, does anyone know where the information that the MCA or anyone else gets regarding the proper tires comes from? is it stated in a Ford publication from 1965-66?

My restorer must have not known about this at the time he purchased my tires from Coker as Coker carries 3 brands of 695X14 Dual Redlines-US Royal, Firestone, and BF Goodrich-I guess the Coker rep that was at the trailer at the show didn't know either....

  • Quite frankly, we take all too much on faith in what we do as a hobby. Your concern is valid and the answer has always been -'well, everybody knows that'. Not much of pre-67 Ford and Mustang assembly or parts are documented and what is documented has been often debunked by the experts. It would be to everyones advantage to have a single source for restoration, a 'bible', but from most accounts, too many variations exist to create one.

As to the Coker salesman, business is in business to sell product. I had a local Mustang store sell me 67 wheels for my 66 - 'cause they are the same'. Let the buyer beware, let the owner pay and let the restorer suffer the consequence.

  • FWIW, I was fortunate to contact the original owner of my 9/65 San Jose car. He kept a log, and in this log he noted how he loved the redline "Tiger Paws" on his new car. I don't know if they actually said Tiger Paw on them in '65, but they had to be US Royal.

  • The biggest difference between SUPER SAFETY 800XP tires and the Coker dual redlines is the lack of "ribs" on the sidewall at the tread. They also "feel" heavier.

Have a few leads but nothing definite. I'd hate to have to install white walls on the K convertible.

  • What color top on that convertible? If white, the white walls would balance the top and bottom of the car nicely. The redlines will also look nice next to your paint, but maybe too much monotone??? Nothing wrong with a white wall - it was correct/option back in the day, no? It's not like you are going to be driving this convertible to the limits of original tires....(:

Of course, I'm biased on the white walls, since I like them and have them on my convertible. Merry Christmas!

Tigerpaw's are "Uniroyal" brand tires. Sounds a lot like "US Royal". Perhaps somewhere along the way, it got confused by somebody.

Well, not exactly. US Royal "Tiger Paws" were on '64 GTOs, and you could buy them at your local US Royal dealer for use on any car. I found several archived newspaper ads from 9/64 promoting Tiger Paws at the US Royal dealer.

I'm not saying the redlines that my car came with were "Tiger Paw" lettered, just that the use of the phrase "Tiger Paw" to describe US Royal redline tires was pretty generic by 1965/1966, and would explain the original owner of my car noting them as such.

  • that looks like the real deal, for sure, but someone here might have better info<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I don't know much about this subject, but saw there is another company that makes reproductions, are these more correct than the Cokers? I'm thinking you know about these, but just in case...

From the picture, they look exactly the same as the Coker tires. Remember what jwc66k mentioned about the edge of the tire...

  • I believe that Charles is right about the tires....I think they are all the same brand to brand in the reproductions.....

I still say that the BF GOODRICH 695X14s that are on my K Mustang should really be on a GM or Chrysler product from the same time period and I should have the US ROYALS.....I wonder why whom ever is reproducing these tires doesn't have the correct wording on the sidewalls??

  • I am trying to decide which tires are correct for my 64.5 K. Tony Gregory's Forth Edition states, that " Mustangs of 64.5 vintage came with white-wall or black-walls only; at customers request. Dual red lines were not available until Aug 20, 1964."

So by that I assume that I would be incorrect to put red lines on my July 21, 1964 car, or since the build date is that close, could it have any of the three?

Is the build date on the door a reflection of the order date or the date that the car was completed and came off the assembly line?
