Authenticating Exhaust Mounts

  • The following images are intended to help clarify the differences in the exhaust hanger mounts.

<b>The first three images show the rear exhaust hanger locations that were used for all three K code exhaust systems:</b> transverse duals with turndowns, Arvinode with turndowns or GT trumpets, and straight through duals with turndowns or GT trumpets.

<b>The last two show the front hanger reinforcing plate that was used on all dual exhaust cars, GT and non-GT</b>: the images are a 65 K code with the dual exhaust floor reinforcing plate compared to a 65 C code wihtout dual exhaust reinforcement.

    <b>NON-GT CARS PRIOR TO 3/22/65:</b>

Up to 10/15/64 the cars were equipped with transverse duals. From 10/15/64 to <i>approximately</i> 3/22/65 the same mounting points were used with different hangers for the Arvinode systems. Some very early GT cars were equipped with Arvinode systems with trumpets. Hangers were fastened to the frame rail with 5/16 NC bolts.

<b>NON-GT AND GT CARS FROM 3/22/65:</b>

From 3/22/65 the cars were equipped with straight through duals and the exhaust hanger locations were moved toward the rear. Non-GT cars would have turndowns and GT cars would have trumpets. Hangers were fastened to the frame rail with 5/16 NC bolts and nuts.

Great information, but a little correction to add. Unless I'm reading it wrong, you stated ALL dual exhaust cars had the floor reinforcing plate. While some or most may have, not all received them. Included below is a picture of the rear floor of my '66 GT fastback (a true GT that is fully documented through the build sheet, buck tag and radiator support markings). The car had a scheduled build date of 10/28/65 at Metuchen. The rear pans are unmolested. You'll notice no additional reinforcing pan is present (the other side is identical).

  • This is a good reminder for all that what Ford intended to happen at build time was not always the case. There will always be a few exceptions to what we believe, or what is written on how these cars were built. Great information Dave on the exhaust hangers.

Wonderful info: Here's photos from my Jan 65 K car: I'll post some more pics from both the passenger and driver sides to verify the rear frame rail holes. It looks as though this car was probably originally an Arvinode car.

If it was a Jan '65 K car, it most definitely had an Arvinode system.
