Jumping out of gear

  • Hello Everyone

I have a friend who is looking at purchasing an A code. The toploader falls out of 3rd gear under de-acceleration - you can see as soon as you take your foor off the accelerator, the gear lever start to fall. Under acceleration, no problems.

Does this sound serious or adjustment in the linkages?

    Thanks

  • He'll be lucky if it is just an adjustment. More likely it is the result of worn parts inside...<img src=images/icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

O agree with Gene - warn parts is very likely.

I have heard that problem is more common in the BW T-10 which is what i have in my non-k fastback with the same problem.

So it is also common in a warn Toploader?

  • The transmission didnt do this until the previous owner put a set of close ratio gears in the box. Seems strange? Any thoughts why that would happen.

He bought the car, in any case.

  • Not the same transmission, but the experience is the same. Quite a few years back, I owned a 72 Volks bug. I had the clutch cable snap on me in a McDonalds drive-thru. Since the trans used helical-cut gears and synchros, I could drive the car by power-shifting the transmission once I jumped and started in first gear. By using the powerband of the engine, I was able to listen and feel the "sweet spot" when I could push the shifter into the selected gear. Upshifting and down was easy once I learned to listen to the motor. The real old Volkswagen trannys used straight-cut gears and were called "crash-boxes" because the gears would clash if you forced the shifter. The synchros in the newer trans allowed the gears to mesh properly at a given RPM. Sounds like the previous owner installed the new gear set, but used the old synchros. If he holds it in third during deceleration he should be able to keep it in third, but be looking for a re-build in the near future... Kevin

  • Here is just a little more information about blocker rings and synchros. I have been rebuilding 4 speeds for over 40 years now and there are some misperceptions regarding some symptoms and cures. Blocker rings are named that because that is what they do. They are made to move about 1/2 tooth off from straight so that the synchro slider drum has to hit the teeth on the blocker ring. When that happens it pushes the blocker ring, which has a cone shape inside matching the gear, against the gear causing the gear turn at the same speed as the synchro drum. Thus the gear is synchronized in speed making the shift quiet. The blocker ring has no other purpose. The small teeth on the speed gears and the synchro drums are the major culprit when having the trans fall out of gear. They both get worn when you hear the trans grind and after enough times the teeth are too worn down to keep it in gear. Replacing the synchro assembly only can sometimes fix this if the drum is fairly worn but the gear usually wears more. This makes gear replacement necessary to correct the problem. As you can imagine, this can add up quickly in costs as you usually need both 2nd and 3rd gears. That means two synchro assemblies and two gears in most cases. The first gear usually holds up well as it is only used for downshifting. Sometimes the main drive gear also is worn beyond use. Another sometimes over looked area is that shift forks can wear against the synchro drum causing a loose fit and requiring replacement of the forks as well. I hope this gives a better understanding of some 4 speed problems.

  • I stand corrected. Your right Fred the small gears on the main gears are worn. I do machine those and it helps big time . Realy great for speed shifting. And i also lap the syncro blocker to the gear (cone area) which helps also. A little trick that Doug Nash used to do. You wil do more damage to your top loader trans by using the JUNK Ford shifter. Put a Hurst shifter in your car!!!! It has limiters so not to bind the slider.Plus saves the shifting forks. Ron
