Please evaluate the restoration of this carb

  • I just received this carb from the restorer and would like some feedback about it. Looks like the plating is quite thin, especially on the choke plate area. Restorer claims it is normal and better than original. What do you guys think of this carb - obviously it's a clone, but do you think it will pass? link has more pics.

    Thanks,

    Troy

  • The restored carburetor looks excellent. I've seen others that are similiar and others that look bad. Your question, will it pass? Pass what? Yes it's a clone, but you already knew that. If you're asking will it pass as a hipo carburetor as seen in your photo's, the answer is NO....if you want a carburetor that looks similiar to that of a real one than the answer is: you're close. When the carburetor is on the car with the air cleaner mounted, it will pass as a nice restored 4100 carburetor. Of course, you're going to tell folks it's a clone.

  • Thanks for the feedback. Yea, I want it to pass for authentic and correct when the air cleaner is installed. It won't be a concours show car, but I want people to see and know what is correct on a K code when I open the hood at cruise nights and car shows.

  • Great pictures, Charles. I have several NOS 4100 carbs and they match with yours. Mine also have paint daubs on top of the venturi clusters. Does your original have these paint daubs? Maybe only replacements did?

  • Just in case anybody is curious, I had this carb restored by KP Carbs. Fast turn around, good communication and honest pricing.

  • Thanks Troy, I was wondering who did it. I finally got in touch with Kurt again a couple months ago and I got a MUCH better reply this time. I sure must have caught him on a very bad day last time. He was very apologetic for his last response to me. My carb is going in sometime this month...

I remember there being some paint daubs on the venturi, but sold the carb a while back since I didn't have a need for it. <img src=images/icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Might they have been red daubs on the arms of the venturi?

A number of the marks in your pictures line up with some C6ZF-C anf F pictures I've got

  • I have the following NOS Hipo carbs:

    C4OF-AL

    C6ZF-C

    C7ZB-B

All of them have red daubs of paint on the secondary venturi cluster arms. There are no markings on the primary venturi clusters. I have an NOS carb for an "A" code car and it does not have any venturi cluster markings at all.

  • I had also Emailed a little with Kurt of KP carbs over a year ago.

He is an Ex-Pony carb employee who stayed in New York when Pony moved to New Mexico.

I think he has the knoledge to do these carbs like Pony, but wonder if he is able to do the same quality job for his lower price??

I would be interested to hear how the carb performs running before I send mine in.

  • Well, I'll gladly let you know how it operates after it's installed. However, I can tell you that I have heard many stories about Pony Carbs not operating correctly. My mechanic pretty much swears that all the Pony Carbs he has worked with needed additional work in order to operate correctly.

  • I had Kurt do my carb a couple of years ago. I needed the zinc dichromate plating more than a rebuild since it worked just fine the way it was. It came back looking good, and works just fine. Not a real challenge since there was no real problem to begin with, but I was satisfied. He keeps a person in the dark about when it will come back, communiction skill is not the best and I had doubts if it made it to him, but all ended well. And yes, he did work for Jon at Pony for quite some time but did not make the trip to New Mexico when Pony Carbs moved. He is (or was at that time) difficult to contact, and sometimes crabby when you finally talk to him, so be prepared for that. He had a regular job at the time I contacted him and he of course had to do the carb business in his spare time.

  • I never had the need to talk to Kurt on the phone. We exchanged emails, and he responded quickly and courteously. I couldn't have asked for an easier person to do business with. He kept me updated on the progress without me even asking.

  • This is an old post, but I just saw it so will add my two sense. I have found the plating to be overdone. Original carb metal parts were more sedate in color. But, on this carb, the big problem is the presense of the idle compensator valve on the back of the air horn. This says "CLONE" in capital letters. There was never an idle compensator valve on a HiPo carburetor. But, Galaxie 4100 Autolites used then extensively.

  • Hmmmmmmm.... though Kurt has never done any work for me yet (mostly due to lack of communication) this makes me reconsider doing business with him. I've definitely experienced crabbiness on the phone...
