auto trans C-servo now repopped

  • I just saw a blurb in the Nov. Mustang Monthly that California Pony Cars now has reproduction C-servos available. This is good news for the auto transmission guys.

  • Does this include both the housing and piston?

  • Actually, the "C" servo covers have been out for awhile, from the early 90's. And they do include the cover, servo piston, and pan gasket with instructions for installation. They are not exact re-pops as they do not carry a Ford number around the edge of the servo cover like factory. However, they are an excellent choice for a street car if you'd like a little extra punch in your shifts.

  • This is true, I just talked to them and they have the full kit for $199.50 and it has all the right parts that distinguished the hipo from the ordinary C-4. Or so they say. I will be getting a kit for my K.

  • Got a phone number of who you talked to?

For the correct parts to convert a standard C4 into a HiPo you need:

The C servo, piston and seals,

    Lighter secondary governor valve,

Weaker throttle pressure booster valve spring,

Weaker intermediate servo accimulator valve spring, and

Separator plate with two holes enlarged.

I would be interested to see if they have all this in their kit. Other shift kits I have examined take a different approach to changing the C4 shifting characteristics.

  • They have an 800 number, but I can't find it, but the direct number is 1-909-923-2357. I talked to a Cindy, she was putting together the new web site and talked of the details in this kit. report back here, if you please.

  • I talked to Cindy at California Pony Cars about this kit. She said it is a servo kit. It includes the cover, piston and gaskets. I specifically asked if it included and changes to the control valve and governor, and she said no. So, it might look like a HiPo C4 on the outside with the kit, but the important HiPo C4 changes on the inside will not be there.

  • OK, plan B. Can you isolate/identify each part that needs to be reproduced, to factory specs? then maybe we can get it done. My K was ripped off sometime in its history, and buying another hipo just to rip its tranny out is not the most desireable optin for me. Does anyone out there have a real hipo automatic they can sell me, or use to reproduce the parts? I am willing to make the parts available to others if we can make them.

  • Yes, I have fully documented the differences between the standard C4 and the 289 HiPo C4, and published the results in the Fairlane Club of America bi-monthly magazine. I have a link to the pertinent pages below. This is a high-quality 4.5MB PDF file, so hopefully you have a high-speed internet connection.

This C4 came out of my 1965 Fairlane 289 HiPo automatic. It is the PCW-AF transmission. Other than the manual lever, it is the same internally as the 1966 Mustang HiPo C4. The 1967 C4 differs in the control valve for the 1-2-D pattern, so there are some slightly different changes on that C4. The 1965-66 C4 was a dual-range-drive C4. My transmission was water damaged, but looks rebuildable using parts from a standard 1965 C4. The only stumbling block was that one of the two HiPo-unique internal springs in the control valve was broken into four pieces due to rust. I have been working with a spring company to custom-make this spring, but running into some problems with the specs. Ford called for a spec that said the spring needs to be able to operate in 350°F transmission oil without being damaged. Current carbon spring steel is limited to 250°F. I am looking into other possible materials, like chrome vanadium, chrome silicon, and stainless steel. So far, I have not found the "perfect match" for this spring. I have requests for quotes out to about five companies and am waiting for their responses.

I...and likely many others...would be very interested in a COMPLETE Hipo C4 Kit...not only for my K-auto but for my non-K C4 Mustangs!
