Wanted 65 Hipo axle bumper.

  • Looks to me as if he is saying all Ks and '67 390 cars as well.....wouldn't a '67 K have this plate? wouldn't say something later then use this plate? like '68 390-428 cars, and 69s-I think all '69 V8 Mustangs had the 9" rear??

  • These plates came on all dual exhaust cars no matter K or A code or for that matter all the way upto a boss 302, mach1 the early dual exhaust plate was smaller as stated in the pictue san jose- those are the early plates seen on san jose, dearborn, or metuchin cars. the later style goes thru 70

Yes the plate I had cnc machined is made from an original 69 mach1 dual exhaust plate

here is the same plate on a 70 boss 302

  • FYI - some of what "hipo" put in his post may be inaccurate - sorry hipo.

Not all K codes had a rubber bumber on the rear housing axle plate - at least not mine!

My April '65 K code had the normal rubber bumper mounted to the axle plate on the floor - I will try to post a picture of this. The holes in the plate allow this and it fits.

I know it was there from the factory because I removed it for the restoration and there was virgin primer underneath it.

I think we have discussed this "plate" at length and the concensus is that ALL K codes got this plate because of the dual exhaust. Until the GT package was released only the K code could have factory dual exhaust - so there was a special body metal build for this. When Ford released the GT they didn't create anything new in the sheet metal builds - they just took the K code metal "chassis" build because this was already set up for dual exhaust and the axle plate doesn't make much difference if an 8" rear end was put in. This may also explain why my car has the normal rubber bumper on the floor instead of the early bumper on the axle - my car is not a GT but was built at a time when Ford was making a lot of them - so this would be a normal production change to improve efficiency - or it could have just been a line mistake.

It is basically concrete that this plate is required to be an original K code or "FACTORY A CODE GT". If the other plate is there your car is not "as it left the factory", has had major sheetmetal replaced, or if we ever find one - a rare factory mistake - still looking for proof of this last one - haven't seen one yet.

    My 2 cents!

  • was your car an automatic? most of the ones with the the bumper plate attached were automatic... I have restored well over 30k's and all the automatics I had the bumper

  • I have encountered two original 66 4 speed Kars that had both the rubber bumper on the body and on the rear end shield plate. The one on the body was a two bolt type and it certainly did conflict with the one on the axle as they were deforming each other. They were both Metuchen Kars. The first time that I encountered this I thought that it was bogus but apparently just a factory error. This has been brought up on this forum in the past.

  • fourth edition page 90. Hipo variation #2 usually found on late 65'cars though 66' and later. Yes 67 K code car's did have this variation plate, as well as later mustang's which came from the factory with 9" rear ends. Early 64 and a half though most of 65 used the variation #1 style. See lower page 89. These plates did not come in A code cars.

  • The plates were unique to the K-Codes because the 9-Inch Third Members extend out more toward the Transmission than the 8-Inch Third Members- which also resulted in the K-Code Driveshafts being shorter than the 8-Inch.

  • Here is a link that includes Charles picture of an A code GT with the Hipo type bumper plate:

  • Charles is CORRECT - it has been posted and shown here several times.

Please do some searching in the archives before posting that long time members here are wrong - SORRY hipo.

We all share a lot of information and do our best to get the facts right.

In this case - we have proven several times that A code FACTORY GT cars share the same K code axle plate - AND this makes sense if you really think about it:

1 - Before the GT only the K code had dual exhaust

2 - The K code had a special frame "metal" set up for Dual Exhaust and 9" rear end - unique pieces were used not shared with the regular Mustangs.

3 - Why would Ford add yet another chassis for dual exhaust and 8" rear axle when all they had to do was use the exisiting K code build to suppliment the GT requirements - doesn't make sense and would not have been cost effective for Ford at a time when they were building these cars as fast as possible and the bean counters were milking every penny out of the process.

    OK I'll get off my soap box now.<img src=images/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Hello everybody from Wyoming! I have 2 GT Coupes sitting in my yard, 1 being a 65 K code and the 2 being a 66 A code. The 65 does have the 9" snubber plate on the frame rail, I'll be happy to crawl underneath the 66 to look and see what type of snubber plate is underneath if any one is interested?

  • Hi HCS67, Are you selling the cars or are you offer the bumper plates for sale. I am the original poster of this topic. After all this discussion I still do not have the correct bumper. Dave
