K code markings

  • <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>

Been cleaning up the front ent of my k code and underneath a few layers of paint on the rad support came across these markings. Most are kind of obvious but on passenger side have no idea of what BL or 8L could mean.

    dOzf - that's a 65 Dearborn car - correct?

    Agree it's BL

  • OK, I will admit that I don't know what all the marking represent! I know what the GT, K, and now the BL mean, but what do the other marking represent?

Should also be some more up top. Got a pic of the whole rad support?

Also, please post your VIN, or at least the assembly plant and scheduled build date.

    Sorry, realized that this isn't a Dearborn car... I hope! <img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Big guessing game I got going [Blocked Image: http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/c8zf/DSC05330.jpg]

Difference between markings on driver and passenger side is driver side markings are on top of base paint as opposed to passenger side with markings on bare metal then painted over. At least that's what it looks like. The reason I say this is because as soon as I started rubbing all markings vanished on driver side. On passenger side the more i removed layers guck and pain the more the markings appeared.

    Other markings

found some markings behind the battery on fender apron but can't make out what they are.

Below rad support on crossmember 3 digits in pink. Looks like "259"

And driver front apron inside the wheel well 321 stacked verticaly and right next to that is a 330

All right car is a 66 GT coupe San jose built serial 6F07K247603. Warranty tag says Body 65A color K and trim 22

Here are some other markings. On rad support driver side GT marking and below is what looks like a broken K<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana" size=2 id=quote>

For some reason San Jose didn't always do the list on the radiator support - IMHO most likely a specific shift or time period thing

One of a bunch of places we find the second rotation number IMHO likely in red originally on this car. And likely that color since its a later car

Yes the one we often call the "list" IMHO these appear to be more related to the sheet metal production rather than the car. Possible one panel of a pallet was marked in this way to identify it for some purpose. Similar pattern has been seen on early Dearborn cars also. I find them on maybe one out of every hundred cars

    Again, thanks for sharing

I wondered how long before someone would "catch" this (heh heh heh).

  • Another interesting marking to share. I noticed this shape earlier but didn't mention it. On rad support driver side there is this rusty big "X". Hopefully you can see it in the picture.

    [Blocked Image: http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/c8zf/DSC05330.jpg]

Today I took my time and carefully peeled away the layers of paint covering rad support only to find small fragments of a red paint on the outer fringes were the X is located. Not much left of the red that hadn't flaked off and rusted over the years but it seems obvious the X had been painted in red over bare metal then covered in black.

Never seen this before. Anybody know what the X is all about.
