speaking of reproduction parts...

  • I bought a remote mirror and set of tail light lens from Mustangs Unlimited a couple years ago.

The mirror was supposed to be concourse, maybe it was packaged wrong, but it looked like it was made of chromed plastic, and you could see what looked like brush marks in it. Sent it back, they could not confirm if it was the typical 'best' mirror or not, so I got one from Year One. It is fine.

If that ain't bad enough, the lens, instead of FOMOCO, actually was stamped MOFOCO. MOFOCO? No copy write infringed there. They could not explain how they could sell a part like that.

    What's your story?

  • I've purchased MANY parts from "MU" in 15 plus years - they WERE a good source until about 8-10 years ago when they expanded and started chasing big money - IE CHEAP CHINA crap.

While I am still a customer of "MU" I VERY carefully examine every part I buy from them. I have the good fortune that my office is only 2 miles from their Atlanta warehouse.

I've had similar "bad" reactions to parts from Cali Mustang, NPD, AutoKrafters, and several others - even when you ask they do not always know where it is made or of what "quality" it is. I've even gotten "BAD" NOS FoMoCo parts - so it isn;t just the repo stuff.

Sad to say it is a reality of our hobby and the economy - plus the Muscle Car Craz.

I have been very happy with almost all Scott Drake parts - he seems to really care about his part quality. So I ask for his parts whenever possible.

  • It's getting where the best thing to do is simply restore as many original parts from your car as possible.

Did buy a bunch of repro stuff recently for a '67 convertible I'm putting together. One of the items is a washer bag. Went to put it on the car last night and noticed one of the brass rivets was totally missing! How the heck can you let something like that go by? The bag was in a clear plastic bag, so it's not like it was obscured by packaging. Now I have to carry this down to a trim shop and have a rivet put on... grrrrrr!

  • Boy, this should be a hot thread. My short list: Four repo air cleaners before I got one with nice chrome - 3 from MU and the good one from KAR mustang, three drivers o/s rear view mirrors to get one with respectable looking plating, inside rear view mirror bracket whose chrome was heavily pitted within 3 months, rear package tray for my coupe, bought two and both ill fitting and cheesy looking, ended up making my own and I won't even go into the repo front fenders that I tried to get to fit on my friends 66 T code coupe......

I have hears that the reproduction quarter panels are absolutely terrible and don't fit worth crap......why can't the chineese figure this out???

Imports are better isn't that why people buy Toyota's, Honda's, Nissan, KIA, Volkswagen, BMW etc.........Domestic auto makers are losing market share because imports are suppose to be better....Nobody wants a car or parts made by an American company.

  • forget the repops!!! buy the nos that is out there. yeah yeah yeah, the prices are CRAZY!!! but when you pull that fresh ebay purchase out of that box, and feel that heavy nos mustang part in your hand, its like......SEX.....

thats all i have to say about that.

    Are you doing it right????

It's a problem when some of the apparent NOS equipment that are being sold are used, sorta looses the idea of being NOS.

I looked at some Steel Styled Wheels here in Australia (from the US) that had weld spats that weren't cleaned off and then chromed on top of the spats. The seller was charging top dollar for a sub standard product. Needless to say I didn't buy them.

Problem for us from over here, if we get products and they're crap, sending them back is a killer with shipping.

    Gotcha! <img src=images/icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • I try and get nos as much as possible but only purchase the parts when they come up at reasonable prices. Too many guys are trying to get rich on their nos stuff. I have had good luck with MOST of the parts I have received from Scott Drake. Don't be surprised if certain parts come with the wrong thread size for bolts or screws. Often, drilling and tapping are necessary. If only they took more time to get the small stuff right.
