• Yes it is not the original motor - just look at the pictures......give this seller credit he pulled the pan and showed 2 shots of the bottom end - specifically the main caps.

The main caps are not HiPo, so I would expect the other pieces in the bottom end to be regular 289 too.

  • This Kar is back on Ebay again. The Buy-It0Now has been raised from $34,500 on the previous auction to $37,500 on the current auction:

65 Koupe early San Jose Phoenician Yellow 4 speed
66 GT Koupe Dearborn Blue 4 speed
66 KGT San Jose fastback pony interior Silver Frost 4 speed
    64 Falcon sedan delivery 289 4 speed
    65 Ranchero 289 4 speed
    66 Corvette roadster 427/425 4 speed

  • I have seen another original 66 Kar with the rubber snubber on both the body and rear end. The two pieces were just beating each other up. The dash bezel and glove box door are interesting as they have both been converted to woodgrain by way of inserts as the design of the bezel and glove box door are standard pieces.

The "intended" configuration would be the square corner bumper plate welded into the unibody with no bumper stop bolted to it and a rubber bumper attached to the rear assembly.

Seeing as K codes were such low production, it stands to reason that an assembly line worker may not have realized that the rubber bumper should not have been bolted to the unibody. I'm guessing that San Jose produced the bulk of '66 K codes since they were doing all the Shelby cars. Would be interesting to know what the production percentages were per assembly plant.

  • As I have posted before - my April '65 Dearborn K 2+2 has the bumper on the body too - when it was removed for restoration it looked brand new underneath. Rear diff was in a box and taken to the restoration shop - so I don't remember if it had the bumper on it too - I'll look ASAP.

With the GT cars using this bumper I can see how the line workers could get confused - especially when mixing GTs and K codes.
