<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> K-Code Mustang convertibles seldom come up for sale but few realize how rare these cars really are. In 1965 Ford made 606,000 Mustangs. Of these only 7,273 were equipped with the 289 High-Performance package. The Ford records identifying how each car was optioned have been lost but the High-Performance Mustang Guide estimates that only 20% or 1454 of the High-Performance packages were convertibles. As convertibles have much shorter lives than coupes or fastbacks and it would be reasonable to assume that fewer than 1000 of these cars survive today. This is one such survivor.

The car was purchased new in Richmond, VA and driven for some time there. In the 1970’s it was parked in a barn and stayed there until a son-in-law of the original owner resurrected the car in the late 1990’s. The car was restored to very good daily driver condition by him in the early 2000’s

The son-in-law installed a rebuilt 1969 302 engine but kept the original Hi-Po exhaust manifolds. The remainder of the drive train has the original bell housing, HEH top loader 4-speed transmission, drive shaft and 9 inch rear end assembly.

The lower quarters were replaced and it was repainted, not the original Caspian Blue, but a Ford Mustang production blue from a late 1990’s model. He left the original black standard interior alone but added a leather cover and padding to the dash. The floors and torque boxes appear to be in good shape. The car retains the Hi-Po unique bumper plate for the differential nose as well as the hanger bracket for the left side exhaust and the factory relocated bracket for the rear brake line. Since purchasing the car in 2005 I have added new springs and shocks, upper A arms and a new top along with a new power top motor and lines and other items that needed attention. All the work I had done was performed by a reputable shop in the Northern Virginia area and I have all documents of that work.

The car runs, shifts, steers great and is a nice driver that you can take to work or on trips. Bottom line is that this is a nice reliable driver that will get attention wherever you go. It would also be a great investment for an enthusiast, since k-code convertibles are very rare and with period correct engines sell for $35,000 and up.

No matter what, you will have the satisfaction of owning one very rare and desirable car.

  • What do you guys estimate this car is worth ? i've been told the floor has been replaced as well as the lower quarters. seller tells me it has surface rust at the rear wheel wells. trans & rear end are correct but not many other K parts except exhaust manifolds & maybe the balancer.

please offer your opinion of its value as i'm planning to make the seller an offer.

    thanks-

  • Can't anyone offer their opinion of what this car is worth ?!? you guys are usually eager to critique Kars but for some reason i'm getting zero response on this convert.

  • $20k high end?

What a car is worth is relative to how badly someone wants one at the time. $15k would give you some room to purchase an original engine which you'll probably have $10k into (with rebuild). As it has been said here many times, you are always better off buying a more complete car drivetrain and K specific parts wise. If you take into account $'s what it would cost to bring this car up to a clean driver status, you might be better off being patient and spending more on a car you can enjoy right now.

    My .02cents

  • A driver with the wrong engine and wrong color is a lot of work to bring up to show standards. Wrong color is an automatic 20 point deduction in competition. If a buyer wanted this car to be correct there is $20K, or more, worth of engine and paint work.

  • It wouldn't make sense for someone to buy the car thinking they can bring it up to show standards. It would have to be taken completely apart for that. As it is now, it's just a weekend driver, priced right if that's how you want to keep it.

  • 68 and 69 standard 302's have a fairly thick balancer and although they are not as thick they can at first glance can be mistaken for a Hipo balancer. They have a fairly large step in the outside diameter about half way around the circumference.

  • i had an inspection of this Kar done back in July and was told the right rear torque box was rusted & needs to be replaced. seller knows this but i see his ebay listing says "floors & torque boxes in good shape".

  • $20k is not too bad for the car, maybe a tad high. It would cost $40-50k to restore it though.

Not too many of these available nowadays. If it was a later production one with more options I might be considering it! Dark Blue with black interior is my favorite color combo.

It sounds like it could become a beautiful K-cont, after all what can you buy today for $20k Thanks

  • This Kar was purchased by Adison Colin who is 41GPAWS on this site. He has had a fair number of Hipo Kars and I believe that he may still have a K engine for this Kar. Congratulations on your purchase.

  • looks like Adison has a bit of a midas touch, since he just sold this car in ebay for about 5k more than he paid for it. the person he bought it from listed it in ebay about 3 times over a period of 6 months in 07 with no luck selling it until Adison picked it up.
