Was able to uncover the rear leaf spring color codes on the K-convertible springs. Thought I would share since it was such a nice example:
Nice example of original rear spring markings

Nice work! Thanks for the great pics.

Charles, the results look great. This Evaporust doesn't look like it's easily obtainable. Did you get it right from their site?
-
I bought it through a place called Gemplers. It was about $100 with shipping for a 5 gallon bucket.
-
Greg - I buy it at O'Reillys if you have one of those near you. I think Harbor Freight also carries it.
-
Jim, that's good to hear. Thanks guys.

Charles, Hey, Thanks for sharing the pics!! How do you plan on duplicating these marks after you restore the springs? just curious as I plan on correcting the marks that were put on my springs.
-
I will most likely just touch-up the original marks. If doing them from scratch, would use a spray bomb with a circular spray pattern (as opposed to a fan pattern.)
-
Different plants yield different markings is the important thing to remember so dearborn could be different then san jose or metuchin
-
Rick's Dearborn car would most likely have had spray dots. The May '65 GT convertible I restored had them and have references of cars going back to August '64 from Dearborn with spray dots.
-
Looks like they painted those springs with them laying down. Didn't Jeff have pics of some SJ cars with the runs running in that same direction?

Yes, looks like they were sprayed laying on the side.

What can I use to remove the markings that are on my springs at present? what type and colors of spray bomb paint should I use to apply the new markings?
Charles, You have a good memory about my car! you are correct that its a Dearborn car with a scheduled build date of July 27, 1965....do we know what say an early '66 Dearborn car would have had?-still the same markings?
-
Basic yellow and green Krylon cans would probably be fine. Lacquer thinner should wipe off what you have on there now.
-
Thanks AGAIN Charles!! Its all in the details!!
-
Since you will likely have allot of choices try Hunter Green and Bright Yellow if available for this particular application

Jeff, Thanks!! Its my understanding that Krylon is an enamel paint in the spray cans.....and Charles suggested lacquer thinner to remove what is on my springs now in a different location-is it assumed then that the stripes that I have are done in lacquer??
-
Just hope their not done in catalyzed urethane
-
Charles, You DO seem to remember my car pretty well...you saw the stripes on my rear springs...what are THEY typical of-anouther assembly plant besides Dearborn? earlier cars? later cars? I wonder why my restorer elected to do the markings like he did?
-
The stripes are typical of the Metuchen assembly plant.
