Choke cables, revisited

  • Has anyone been able to determine the changeover from the 63.06" choke cable (C5ZZ-9700- to the 57.62" cable (C5ZZ-9700-C)? The February '65 San Jose K convertible I'm restoring had the short cable with the pull handle mounted below the ignition switch. My early Jan '65 Dearborn K fastback had the long cable with the pull handle over by the LH kick panel.

Also, based on my observations, it appears that with the shorter cable, the rubber firewall grommet was introduced (352963-S). The long cable usually just has strip caulking pressed around the cable where it goes through the firewall. The long cable passes through the hole diagonally instead of straight through.

  • Hey Charles just wondering if somebody cut the choke cable at one time or it broke so they just rerouted it. Also I do no for a fact the early 64 1/2 choke cables the mounting bracket is different I will try and snap a picture of the difference

  • This will be of little help to your search for information since you have a Jan 65 Dearborn car with the long cable, but my April 65 Dearborn car also has the long choke cable for what it is worth.

It's only a 6" difference between the -B and -C cable. I assume the extra length had to do with being mounted on the left side of the steering column and keeping it from kinking.

I don't have a '64 MPC, but was interested in knowing what the -A cable assy was. Think I read somewhere that the pull handle bracket was different too, like you mentioned.

Here's a pic of the handle mounting when I got the K convertible:

Incidentally, there is no hole for the tab on the bracket. I have 2 other examples of SJ K cars built at this time in assembly and they have the knob mounted in the same place.

  • I'm interested in hearing more information about the choke cable knob/bracket part mounted under the ignition switch.

I've had and seen quite a few HiPo cars (especially '65-66 GT350's-early and late) and have never seen them originally mounted anywhere but on the LH side.

My March '65 and June '65 production cars (both SJ since they are GT350's) are mounted on the LH side near the kick panel. I've seen '66's near the end of the GT350 run mounted at the same place.

Not doubting what you are saying, I'm just very interested to learn more.

  • I checked a picture from 65 showing a Shelby made in March as the

radiator is dated 2-65 and the choke cable is run sideways through

the firewall and there appears to be agrommet in the hole.

It's ok with me, just trying to figure this out too. The -C cable version is all that shows in the January '66 MPC, which leads one to believe that the shorter cable was used starting sometime in '65 production (since the -B and -C are listed in the 1/65 MPC.) If the knob location was not changed, then why was the cable length shortened by 6"?

  • Interesting topic. I also have never seen the choke cable mounted anywhere except by the LH kick panel. I have one period mag article (Aug. 66 M/T) showing it mounted in that location on the supercharged 66 GT350, can't quite make that area out on the stock GT350 but it doesn't appear to be under the ignition switch.

  • The 65 Assembly Manual specify -B choke cable with two

different knobs. One for 64 and one for 65. The grommet

through the firewall is also listed together with a clip

to hold the cable attached to the shock tower to fire wall

    brace on the passenger side.

Yep, saw that last night while hunting for info. Anyone have pics of an original grommet? I found a few pics, but hard to tell exactly what it was. Appears that it was split to allow easy installation over the tube.

    I agree! <img src=images/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

My February '65 Metuchen car has the choke control bracket and knob on the LH side of the steering column. Although Dave Wallace's late December '64 San Jose car has the RH style cable, maybe the SJ cars "changed over" as the inventory of dash B cable assemblies was used up.

    Bo,

Are you using Osborn's Assembly Manuals? If so, where is this located?

I found it in the 1965 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manual

Thanks, Bo. I like the Assembly Manuals, but it is tough to find what you are looking for sometimes.

The grommet pictured looks very much like the ones used for the brake line through the shock towers to me.

    <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana" size=2 id=quote>

I agree. It's not listed as the same part number, but it would probably work. I have an original (I believe)grommet in the firewall on one of my cars. It looks just like the grommet in the link to the picture that Charles posted. I need to go and check out the size as compared to the brake line grommet as you suggest.

The clip appears to be the same one that holds the parking light wire at the front of the car and the gas tank sending unit wire under the car near the sending unit.

I never noticed that before-pretty cool.
