San Jose cars with build dates of 12/64 or 1/65

  • In looking at cars built during this period there are a number of early style details that were mixed on cars built in SJ. I am trying to compile data on various details on SJ cars delivered during this period. If you own one of these cars and would be willing to help please send me a PM and I will send you an email with the list of questions. You can provide reply to answers in your email back to me. Even if your car has been restored and is not entirely original there may be some information of value. Thanks.

  • The three I have are late Jan/early Feb '65. Some of the early features on these are:

-3 wire heater motor with switch off in middle position

-threaded wiper arm shafts with chrome bezels

    -open hood bumpers

    -early carpet w/out toe pad

-slide carriage on spare (1 has, other 2 don't)

-clip on window cranks and door pulls

  • Hi!I have a K code 2+2 made Dec.64 OR Jan 1965.It's missing the door tag,so I'm keenly interested in your research (s#5r09k179361)I had thought it was a late Dec 64 but incomparing it to some #s in the K bible I came up with @Jan 16th.I am wanting to peg it exactly if possible I am pushing towards an mostly nos resto so it really matters! The block and heads date Sept 64&Dec 64.It has the A on the vent,64 style hood bumpers,3 wire blower w center off, screw on wiper bezel nuts, and the carriage bolt for the spare.I hope any of this helps ,wish I had the door tag!!!Thanks,Randy

  • I keep my own database and I also have the Mustang Production Guide. The following are some vins and date codes:

    5r07T179097 26A

    5r09C179162 28A

    5r09C179476 28A

    5r09C179682 28A

    5r09A180101 29A

From these numbers and dates one would conclude that your kar would have had a scheduled build date of 28A, January 28th. I should mention that when one looks at these databases, the build dates don't always follow the sequential numbers in the expected order. This seems to be especially true of K codes since they were special order kars in many cases. This has been touched upon in other posts.

  • I started this thread and failed to share my info:

    5R09K16980, scheduled build date 12/30/64

    Early style carpet.

Early style clip on window & door cranks.

Two speed center off/three wire heater.

Uncertain of the original shifter handle whether angle or curved.

    Open style hood bumpers.

    Carriage bolt spare.

Probably an Arvinode car originally based on existing exhaust hangers, though not certain.

Build date on the motor is 12/17/64.

    Screw on wiper bezel nuts.

No "A" on driver side air vent.

Non GT car and uncertain if it had the optional aluminum hood strip originally.

Not sure, the carpet has been changed.

My Nov. 64 SJ 2+2 still has the vinyl glued to the rockers with the new carpet installed over it. Might be worth a try to look.

    Larry,

Can you help us out on any of the other items listed, including exhaust?

Sure, since it was out of the asked for time frame and just a A code, I did't think you were interested.

    5R09A158178

    Early carpet,

Clip on window and door cranks, w/ early arm rest

    Center off heater switch

    Open hood bumpers

    cariage bolt spare

    Screw on wiper bezels

    Non A vent knob

Not sure what to look for on the exaust and don't know if the A

codes had the Arvinode system. Will be happy to look if you tell

    me what to look for.

  • A bit early for your date range. but my November 64 built SJ coupe has:

Clip on door and window handles

    Open hood bumpers

Center off 2 speed blower motor

    Screw on wiper bezels

    Early arm rests

    Curved shifter

When I bought the car back in 1996, it had a very rusty, Ford stamped 2 muffler, 2 resonator exhaust system still on it.

There was a Ford tech service bulletin regarding cutting out the loud Arvinode mufflers and replacing them with quieter ones. It would be interesting to know if the car originally came with those rusty mufflers or if they were the service replacements. The transverse and Arvinode exhausts had a different tailpipe hanger than the later 2 muffler 2 resonator one, so that might be one way to tell.

  • You are correct on the clamp being a distinguishing feature. We believe this is an original Arvinode resonator on an early convertible that was photographed at the K Day show. It is thicker and shorter than the standard dual resonator. It is missing the appropriate band clamp to hold it in place.

  • Thanks to everyone that has posted on this inquiry. If you have not had a chance to list your shifter as angled or curved lever that would also be helpful. Thanks, again.
