First Photos of New Engine Detail!!

  • You guys are the first to see it. It's running, tuned and awesome. I'm glad I did this all myself. I learned alot, considering the only thing close to mechanical work I've ever done was change my own oil prior to this job! I did farm out the tune and media blasting/powder coating on a few parts. I like the way the exhaust manifolds turned out. The only problem is, I had to pull the radiator again as I had a pinhole leak where I must have cleaned too aggressively. Oh well...

    Thanks for all your help!

  • It looks fantastic. I'm not sure how many people advocate this, but separating wires 7 & 8 to opposite ends of the valve cover loom bracket is thought to help avoid misfiring due to 7 & 8 being next to each other in the firing order.

  • Thanks! The original exhaust manifolds were media blasted and then high temp cermakrome coated cast gray. I've been told this is the best coating available and should last a lifetime. I don't believe it, but that's what I've been told.

  • The black is Krylon rattle can Rust Tough Semi Flat. Very easy to apply with the nice fan spray nozzle. Can paint over light rust and/or bare metal according to the can. I didn't do either of that, though. I used a self etch primer over the bare metal and eliminated all the rust first.

I had the manifolds done by a guy here in the MPLS area. My restorer friend blasted them for me and then had them sent to this guy (I don't know his name), who also did all the black underhood powder coating.

Just curious - which underhood parts were powder coated? The braces? I was thinking of doing mine early this summer.

  • I had the original shock tower braces, cowl braces, convertible cowl braces, and the fan shroud media blasted and powder coated. Came out great, but these pieces could have had less gloss to match better. Still looks great. Looking back, I should have probably also done the horns, fan, pulleys and all the brackets. I did those myself with elbow grease, various paint removal techniques, sandpaper and paint.

When I picked up my powder coated parts, the first thing I did was take out the first bag of parts, only to have them drop violently into the box (fell out of the bag) and bang around on the other fresh unbagged parts. I was horrified, as I had not even seen my parts yet. To my surprise, not a scratch or chip to be found anywhere.

    Hi Troy,

Do you know the part number of the Krylon paint? Is it 1613 black? There should be a number somewhere on the can?

    Thanks,

    Bill

  • Krylon RTA 9203. Look for Rust Tough labeling on the can at your auto parts stores...This was all I could find at the auto stores near me.
