Door Plate Resto

  • I am cleaning my original doorplate prior to re-mounting it.

    Two questions:

    1) Has anyone touched up the black of the plate (scratches, etc), and if so, what brand/color of black were you successful with? A brush-on product would seem best here. I'm thinking flat black, or maybe engine bay semi-flat.

    2) The rivets to re-mount the plate - sources?

    Thanks!

I did remove the data plate from the door before paint, being extra cautious removing the rivets so I could reuse them when it was time to reinstall it on the door. Doesn't look like it was ever disturbed.

  • That would be a worthy effort, not easy I'm sure.

  • I chose to reinstall the original door plate on the K convertible. Took a 1 point hit for condition, but it's better than having a repro in my opinion.

The rivets can be pushed out from the back side without damaging them. Just use a wooden hammer handle. Of course, the door has to be stripped to get that kind of access to the back side.

  • thanks caspian65

    i didn't think of that!

makes one wonder about all the other difficult places

    that rivets are used;

ie the chrome just medial to the drip rail!!

one would have to drill out sheet metal welds

    to save these rivets

would anyone go to these lengths?

    whoo...1 point hit!

i think the originality look would substract a couple of points!

    thanks for advise

  • Thanks for the tip on removing rivets! As for condition of plate - well, it's gonna have some character, that's for sure. It's a pity that one gets docked points for original parts that show their patina. Smacks of "ageism" to me.

Good for you! I wish MCA would reconsider this practice of deducting for an original data plate (proves that it wasn't built to owner tastes). Heck, I'd even say you should get bonus points for keeping it REAL.
