Which radiator 66 auto?

  • My Mustang is a 66 K code automatic car. It was born in Dearborn MI in May. What is the correct radiator for my car? I did use Search, but could not answer my question. Thanks in advance. I am a newby, as this is my first post!

  • Welcome, and it's not a difficult answer, stock (surprise) radiator with a p/n C4ZE H2 marked on a tag soldered to the right hand (?) top strap or possible a tag soldered to the core (?). You do not have one with the p/n stamped into the top tank as that was the San Jose type.

  • I will have to disagree on the soldered p/n tag on a '66 Dearborn radiator. Also believe you would be looking for a Z2 for a V8 automatic, but the suffix may have changed that year.

Engineering number stampings would be on the LH (driver) side core support.

  • My 66 hipo automatic radiator (I think it's orginal) has stamped on the drivers side C6ZE-F and on the top tank Mc- E 5 I'm not sure about the top tank as it does not have the FoMoCo logo on the top of the tank and it is smooth. Build date of car Nov. 1965. Hope this helps and maybe somebody can explain the top tank on my car.

Quentin, The radiator that you have is a three core radiator with a Ford part number of C6ZZ 8005 B. It is listed in the Ford master parts catalog as being for 66 Mustang with A/C produced before 1/5/ 66. This is shown in my much older catalog that has not been updated since 1970. The newer catalogs were in their final issue in 1975 and the part number is no longer in those later books. That radiator takes a special fan shroud with a part number oc C6ZZ 8146 A and it bolts directly to the radiator. It has a different shape due to the drastically different shape of the top tank. The first time I saw one of these radiators, I thought that it was an aftermarket until somebody pointed out the Ford engineering numbers on the side mounting strap. These were used in San Jose cars for sure and most likely in all assembly plants. I use them in all of my Kars even though they are technically incorrect for a Hipo because they really cool well in the California sunshine.

  • My Dearborn car has the part numbers and date code stamped down the drivers side, but is a 3 core ( I guess someone upgraded the core when it rotted in the past).

It does keep cool so I have no worries.

I went to a show yesterday after spending all week cleaning etc - dull day with drizzle, great <img src=images/icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Woke up this morning to go to work - clear blue sky - boy do I need to do the California sunshine test!!!!!

  • Welcome to the site..!!The few of us who have original automatic hipo's have very special Kars, with special driving characteristics.

The numbers surviving are very low....having been conceived possibly for the Hertz GT350 automatics used in the rental fleet. Many of those were converted to 4-speed's and the tranny's are long gone.

What do you know about your C-4, what do you know about its originality? PM's are welcome, too.<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
