As far as I can tell from your description, the oblong hole is the one used for the odd shaped tie downs that tow trucks use that are not actual hooks.

been away tring to get wings in boston!!
also we are converting my son's '66 to a T5 trannie!!
2 Q's
would a '66 C code 289 2V use a 6 bolt Bell H
and would my '65 K code use a 6 bolt as well
thanks
iowa
The 66 would most likely use a 6 bolt engine/bell housing, the 65 depends on the date.
Jim
i always ask a Q and then
think to look in the HiPo bible.
your right, only pre 8-20-64's used the 5 bolt Bell H!
all the rest used the 6 bolt.
thanks
iowa
The 8/20/64 date is a generalization. The change from 5 bolt to 6 bolt 289's happened at the same time as the change from generators to alternators, which was at the beginning of the "normal" 1965 model year startup. It's the 64.5 vs. 65 thing...
Since my my son is going to the T5
we are thinking about useing the T5 Bell H
so I would then use his old one on my K car.
my K was built Dec 19, so should have a 6 bolt Bell H
iowa
we pulled patricks engine today
the flywheel is a C5AE 6380-E 4 9L12 C77E-A
the bellhousing is C5TA-6394-A 68r8
he's going to use a new Bell H for his T5 conversion
so will use his old Bell H! in my K car
haven't spent much time on my K car
as we've been working on his T5 project
now he's going to clean up the engine and
engine compartment
then we'll put it all back together!!

The C5TA bellhousing is incorrect for your K car as it is for the larger 164 tooth flywheel. Your 65 Hipo takes a 157 or 160 tooth flywheel. The C5AE flywheel in his car is a 164 tooth flywheel. That flywheel is larger in diameter and may not be compatible with the bellhousing that you are planning to use for your T5 transmission. If you are planning to use a flywheel that was used with a T5 transmission, they have different balancing characteristics than your 1966 289.

hmmmm....
i thot the 6 bolt Bell H
was the same for my Kcar?
and i've never figured out
what, or how a flywheel is balanced
iowa
your right
these are too big for my K car
s.o. must have tampered w my son's '66
soooo.......
i'll be needing a Bell H for my '65 (12/12/64)
anyone have one?
thanks
iowa
do you already have a T-5 bell housing for your sons project ? I have one if you are looking.
I also have a Bell housing that would work for your K, but am not crazy about selling. Have you tried a local junk yard? The stock bell housings are plentiful, but if you can't find one close to home let me know...
Z.
Dave, I just sent you a PM on your bell housing.

when i bought my K kar
the intake manifold had an ear broken off.
i picked up my OH'ed engine today
and right off noted that there is
an empty space between this intake manifold edge and the head.
in comparison there is a rectangular
build up or reinforced area on my son's 289's engine.
is this void on every 65 K car
and was this the reason this ear was broken off?
(BTW i had this ear welded back on to keep the
original intake)
thanks

Dave, That open area is common to all 289 heads that I have seen whether they are standard or Hipo. It is very common to break off an aluminum intake at that point as people tend to overtighten them. Does the filled in area on your sons heads appear to be a modification?
-Fred-
by modification
do you mean that a piece has been welded on?
we recently removed the engine from my son's car
and are amazed at how many things 'Bubba' did to it.
picked up my K code engine yesterday
and here we are by our engines!!

Fantastic pic
You should blow up a copy and put it on your garage wall.
I have a 17 year old son. He is a real petrol head. He likes more modern stuff. Unfortunatly he is a full time wheelchair user.
We would be in the garage together up to all kinds of mischief if he were able.
I envy you. Enjoy your time together.
here are the engine mounts that attach to the frame
these are the ones on my son's '66 mustang.
i believe these are wrong for his year of car.
are these the same ones that the HiPo kars used,
at least the lower mount to the shock tower?
thanks

There's a change over date of 11/1/65 for 289 engine mounts, and I think that date applies to HP mounts as well. The 65-66 (early) HP mount has a special large bolt that runs through the insulators and end "plates", yours is a standard type. Reproduction insulators are available for all. On my Oct 65 build 66 hardtop, I converted to the later style. Be advised that 67 Mustang mounts and insulators are unique to 67 only, 68-70 small block mounts will work in 64-66 as a conversion.
Jim
so we would need the insulator type shown
in the left picture above?
is so, i ordered the wrong ones
the ones i ordered kind of sit in a saddle
which two 'ears' that a bolt goes thru
anywhay, are the lower mounts the same a the hipo's?
iowa
Insulator - yes. For early 66 (and 64-65), there are a right hand and left hand types, later 66 (and 68 on) are interchangable.
Lower mount type - no.
