Best Mustang Restoration shop??

  • I am still trying to find a good reputable restoration shop that specializes in Mustangs to do my '65 "K" Convertible.

I now realize that I'm probably going to have to leave my sand bar (Florida) to find and deal with a GOOD shop, at this point I'm open to suggestions anywhere in the lower 48 united states.

Also:My car has been looked at and it has been determined that it WILL need pretty much everything EXECPT:RF frame rail RF shock tower, firewall, and parts of the cowl, thats it!! the rest will need to be built from aftermarket replacement metal, even the convertible specific structure behind the rear seat will have to be gotten from a donor car, so there won't be much that isn't "re-bodied" Thanks!

Sending your kar out of state is a more expensive, complex proposition, but locating a shop that has a good reputation and is trustworthy is very important. The additional expense might be justified in the long term.

The name of the shop that I am using is BCD Preservations in Harrington, Delaware. Their e-mail is bcdpreservations@yahoo.com. Phone number (302)-398-4014. Ask for Ken.

They are currently working on four convertible Mustangs: two 65-66s and two 67s, including what I call the Phoenix, which was just a 65 A-code conv that was broken in half and rusted. Its sheet metal replacement story is similiar to what you would experience.

With them, you definitely get what you pay for! Expect about $20K in sheet metal work alone if your kar is as bad as you have said.

Restoration Shop, specializing in 1965 thru 1973 Mustangs along with 1965 thru 1970 Shelby's. Our staff has over 50 years experience with Mustangs, plus engines and drive train, body repair, sheet metal replacement, complete paint jobs, plus detailing service for engines and engine bays.

  • Tom - I'm sure you mean 40 years. What a great looking garage.

  • We have the ability to handle your restoration here as we move into a larger facility. Body and paint work is done exclusively by the world famous "Ring Brothers" Instead of the typical one man restoration, contract out certain parts such as body and paint, and motor build to pedigreed shops. The rest we can handle.

Here is a ball park of what to expect

$20,000 in body in paint is probably the light end.

$7000-8000 in engine transmission and rear axle rebuild

    $3000 interior

    $2000 suspension and brakes

    $1000 in wheels and tires

    $1000 convertible top

Disassembly and reassembly at $50 per hour

I'm on the "can of Mountain Dew per hour" end of the spectrum myself. Add in a small bag of Cheetos for every 2-3 Dews. By the time I'm finally done, though, I may have used a few thousand dollars in Dew and Cheetos. :D

  • Hello all.... Mustang Restorations of Illinois did most of the body work on my K. It was done clean and professionally. No complaints. I heard another place, K.A.R.,is second to none. Ed

  • While in Georgia, check out Georgia Classic Restorations in Woodstock (not far from Dallas).

I'm on my third ground up restoration with them, this time an all original 66 GT K Konvertble with an automatic transmission that I bought from the original Georgia owner. (Some of the in-progress pics are on their web site).

  • You should also check out Mustang Central in Byron, Georgia - just outside Macon - http://www.mustangcentral.com.

While they do a majority of restomds and customer "request" customization, they are a family owned company with a very loyal customer base - ie repeat customers.

They have had my K for a while - I'm not rushing them - and all of the metal replacement has been first class. They are doing all of the rust repair and panit inside and out - took them a rolling chassis and getting back the same - I'll do all the rest myself.

The owner was involved with the DIY channel "Classic Car Restoration" '65 Mustang Restomod restification project.
