Fuel pump rebuilding

  • After several weeks of calling, contact was finally made with A-Z fuel pumps in Fairfield, Il. I had talked to Claude on somewhat of a regular basis over the past two years about rebuilding our crimped together fuel pumps. He said he could, and he did rebuild some for a couple of people on this forum. However he was always too busy to do it "right away" and always told me to call back in a couple of months and maybe he would have more time. For the last three months he has not answered his phone, I have called weekly. Today, his wife answered the phone and said tht he had indeed closed his business, that he was 77 years old and it was time for him to slow down. Claude mentioned to me about a year ago that he wold lke for his son to take over the business, but today Claudes wife said that was probably not going to happen, and that they might sell their stock of parts amd machines - but that they were not sure what was in the future. Did not talk to Claude, I had hope of talking him into doing a group of crimped pumps for any one interested on this forum, but that seems to be down the drain now. I also asked if they were keeping a list of possible customers should they sell the business and she said no, they were not. So not too much good news on that front. Sadly, I did not speak directly to Claude, which would have been best, but his wife sounded petty final. Not sure where to go from here. Called everyone who came up on a google search for fuel pump rebuilding, and none either could or in a couple of instances would rebuild the Ford crimped type pumps. Once again a brick wall. There is a rebuilder in Louisville, Ky who also has the tooling to rebuild these type of pumps but says he cannot get parts to do the job and has little interest in looking for the material, even though he says he is a Mustang person. If you have any leads please share them, I have hit a dead end after a couple of years of on again off again searching. Hope that someone has better luck than this.

  • I have come up with a rebuilder in my area (Los Angeles) that I have been working on since early Summer to try to get these crimped pumps done. I have been trying to put something together on this for several years now. I just spoke with them 2 days ago and have finally gotten them to agree to do the work as long as I take care of the plating on the bottom housings. As soon as I have a plater squared away in my area I will be ready to proceed. This rebuilder has done many of these in the past and when the demand fell off they just put the machines in hibernation. I told them that I would probably start off with 50 of each type (with or without filter cans). They assure me that they can get the parts necessary for the rebuild.

  • I would be very curious as to where they source the molded pump diaphram from. This is the only unique parts to these Carter pumps and they are not flat as in most other pumps.

  • Dave, the brake booster guy is about 300 miles north of me. That is still closer to me than to you, though. <img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Dave, I have been successful in getting them done. I had both a 65 and 66 style done as samples to make sure that this will work. I am in the process of gathering up the first 50 pumps that I need to meet their required quota.

  • The fuel pump rebuilding process is not an economical deal. I am just thankful that they can be done at all. Everyone wants to know costs and I do not blame them. The pumps are costing $200 each by the time they are disassebled, tin sent back to me for plating, getting the plating done and sending them back to the rebuilders for reassembly. They do end up with some marks around the area of the tin where they are crimped. This happens when they are disassembled and after plating and reassembly they are not that bad but will still show to some degree. I am reasonably sure that when Ford rebuilt these back in the day, that they were probably using new tin so that they did not have to deal with plating. I have seen some non Ford rebuilt pumps that had very noticeable marks from disassembly. I have come up with a way of marking the pumps to keep all of the pieces going back on the same pumps and getting back to their original owners. Another forum member, Bob, came up with it and it is pretty simple. I will mark the pump body on the mounting gasket surface and the tin on the inlet hose nipple. These marks will be covered by the gasket and the hose when installed so they will not show.
