OK, here are some pics of the 3 Carter Ford pump arms we are talking about.[Blocked Image: http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j226/429scott/CARbureTER%20PUMPS/IMG_2614.jpg]
top one if a 390-428 FE arm as found in CJ X pumps
middle one is 289-302 arm as in the 63-64 1/2 X pumps
bottom one is the FE HD(3908S) arm as used on 292, 330, 361, 391 in early to mid 60's
[Blocked Image: http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j226/429scott/CARbureTER%20PUMPS/IMG_2619.jpg]
notice how the HD(3908S) arm as in the 3908S pump is shorter than the 289 arm, this would make the 3908S understroke when used in a 289.
[Blocked Image: http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j226/429scott/CARbureTER%20PUMPS/IMG_2617.jpg]
289 arm in back and FE arm in front, once again 289 arm is longer causing a FE pump to understroke if installed in a 289, but this time not quite as much.

here is the pics of the spring locater in the in the HD(3908S) arm, see how this is actually a tongue thats punched out of the arm and not a dimple stamped into the arm as in most other Carter application.
Hope this helps.

Kar-nut: Yes, the Carter X pump rebuild kit from AMK works with the 289 screw together pump just fine. You must cut a small amount out of the gasket pictured at right in your post, very easy to do with your old gasket as a template. The only other difference is that the 289 pump only has 2 valves inside and not 3 like the other pumps.
Ralphjr: The heavy duty FE pump arm does look very much like the small block arm and works almost the same. This is NOT the same arm as you see in the Cobra Jet pumps which will really understroke the pump. I will try to post a pic of this arm with the part number tomorrow. The HD arm can be identified by the way the spring under the arm is held in place. On most all Carter arms the spring is located with a dimple stamped into the arm, on the HD pump the arm has a small portion thats actually cut out and a V shaped tongue thats bent down about 90deg that fits inside the spring.

3908 is a FE big block fuel pump, used on 63-68 Ford trucks with 292HD, 330, 361, 391. These are all heavy duty applications, this pump would definitely have a different arm in it than a small block 289. If you install this pump in a 289 the pump will under stroke and not pump near as much fuel as needed.

Thanks Charles, do you think that a heavy spray-on black undercoat would be a suitable replacement.

My 67 Fastback NJ restoration
Please correct me if I am wrong but it is my understanding that after all components were assembled on or threw the firewall that a sealer/undercoat was sprayed on the area of the parts that stuck threw the firewall into the engine compartment, i.e. blower motor, master cylinder, wiring harness. This was presumably to seal against water intrusion from above. This sealer looks like black undercoat. Was this really sprayed on all cars or just cars from specific assembly plants and did it matter if the car had or did not have the undercarriage undercoated at the factory? And finally, is black undercoating and acceptable replacement for this sealer or is there something else. I believe this is what is referred to in the MCA rulebook as line Z. Thanks Scott

Edison assembly - known as Metuchen til 1980. I can remember how to spell Edison much easier.

Fred, when the rebuilder took the pumps apart, did they remove the air pulsator tubes and the wire screen that is below them. I know that many of the rebuilding places never removed these tubes to replace the screens, they just threw a new diaphram and valves in and bent it all back together. I can send pics if it would help. Thanks Scott

Hi, I use Photobucket.com as a hosting site, its free and you just need to create an account with user name and password. You just upload your pics to your album there and you can have the site generate a link to the pics, you just cut and paste the link for each pic into your post and viola its here for everyone to see. Here is a pic from the build sheet. Thanks Scott

I found the original build sheet for a 67 I am restoring, it was taped to the instrument harness(Edison build car). On the sheet under spring front and spring rear there are color abbreviations. Do these indicate the color daub/stripe on that part? Under front spring is YELGRN and under rear spring is ORG WT.

Here are some pics of 2 pumps, NOS right out of the Ford box. You can see how light and thin the gold color is on these. I have seen many later pumps with very heavy and dark gold color. Notice how really thin the plating is on the button as well.

Well, I will take whatever info and advice I can get. This is going to be a driver car but we all strive to do the best job even knowing that some of the detail may disappear in a year or two. Rotation and check off markings would be nice, if I can redo a few of the markings on the engine and accessories that would also be good. This is another one of those projects that started as a repaint and turned into a complete do over with no thought given to any documentation, too bad because this is a very complete car with most if not all of its original parts. But, 40 years and 80k miles take its toll here in eastern Pa. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Scott

I just got a 67 S code fastback from a customer who needs the car reassembled, car is all painted and engine compartment as well but they never documented any of the overspray or chalk marks before stripping and repainting. What is the best source for info on reproducing the assembly line markings in the engine compartment. The car was built in Edison NJ. Thanks Scott

What is the progress on the rebuilder, is he able to get the parts and fix all the old pumps? How much will this cost per pump?
-
I would be very curious as to where they source the molded pump diaphram from. This is the only unique parts to these Carter pumps and they are not flat as in most other pumps.
-
Yeah, I have refurbed the originals as well but the main concern is that the originals were all cad plated and then they were painted white on the outside. Most 40 year old canisters have the plating gone from use or from bead blasting. I certainly don't want paint on the inside where the fuel sits, and if you leave it bare you can get rust from any precipitation that happens to be in the fuel. It would be just so much better if if Scott Drake just painted his the correct color.
-
Chuck, I am pretty sure that the seller was ridgetopdesign that has the banners on ebay. I just checked but they have no items listed currently.
-
Hi, does anyone repop the 65 fuel filter canisters in white with red screen printing. I know Scott Drake shows red canisters with white print in their catalog but I have no idea what year they are correct for?
