So what's the consensus, is Merlyn's theory regarding the paint overspray on a factory installed fuel pump, correct? It sound's very reasonable to me.

The plating on the images Jeff provided is exactly as I have seen.

Here are some pics of 2 pumps, NOS right out of the Ford box. You can see how light and thin the gold color is on these. I have seen many later pumps with very heavy and dark gold color. Notice how really thin the plating is on the button as well.

This confirms what I found under all the grease and paint on my original 4201. Light gold with a slight greenish tint.

Haven't seen any major difference in the platings between the early and late ones I have. Just some thin and some better but the differences are not falling along the lines of early and late.
In any case a nice good finish would likely be more acceptable on a redone pump since it will not longer be 40 + years old

I just received my parts back from the rebuilder after disassembly for replating. I only sent them two representing both the 65 and 66 style of pump. All of the efforts to find out the correct color of plating has been done with a lot of help from people on this forum. I really appreciate all of the input. As luck would have it, the insides of the pumps still have the original plating so it will be easy to match. It never occured to me that the inside might be intact but then I have never had the opportunity to see the inside of one of these before.

Fred, when the rebuilder took the pumps apart, did they remove the air pulsator tubes and the wire screen that is below them. I know that many of the rebuilding places never removed these tubes to replace the screens, they just threw a new diaphram and valves in and bent it all back together. I can send pics if it would help. Thanks Scott

Scott, what I have at the moment is the bare metal housing. I do not see any screens or removeable tubes. A picture would be helpful. My email address is below:
