California "black plate" letters/numbers

  • Can anyone provide the series of numbers used on California black plates that were issued on November 03, 1965? Going to get a set of reproduction black plates for a car sold new at Canoga Park Motors, 21520 Roscoe, Canoga Park, CA on 11 - 03 1965 and want to be as accurate on the numbers/letters as possible. Thanks for any help or direction you can give.

  • My 'original registered in California, Oct, 65 build, K Fastback' has 'RCX' as the first three letters. California spread plates all over the state so I would think that a plate starting with 'P' thru 'T' would be with-in reason for November, 65. Keep in mind that old 'black plates' are not reissued by the state nor are they recognized without a bunch of paperwork and bureaucratic run-around (including 'no' as a final answer). There are ways to do it however.

  • John since its a Nov southern Cal car I would go with something in the low "R"'s (RA-RH)

Calif is changing so people can add Black plates to their cars (unfortunately IMHO) so reproduction ones will likely be cheaper (and normally in better shape)

  • "T" series plates in California are really associated with late 66 and very early 67 production cars. In other words the "T" plate cars would have started with cars registered around the fall of 66.

  • Thanks for all of the help and information. I am going to get a repro set of plates with the following letters/numbers IF none of you think this combination for some reason did not exist. RSN 625 will be chosen. I appreciate the input you all have provided

Has anyone gone through the DMV process in CA to get their 40 year-old Black/Gold plates renewed after years of non-operation? My 67K has one originally issued Black/Gold plate that I wish to permanently retain and use. The car was first sold in June 1967 and issued the Black/Gold "UYA XXX" plates. It was last registered in 1982. What exactly do I have to do to make this happen

  • The letter series on your black plate is correct for your cars selling date. When your car was last registered in 1982 was it with the black plates or a newer replacement? You have a far better chance if the black plates were the last ones registered to the car. Another possibility is to check with DMV to see if your plate number has been reissued for some reason. Here is the link to that page.

If the number is still available, which most likely it will be, you can get personalized plates with your number and use the black plates instead of the newly issued plates. A friend of mine was able to resurrect his black plates on his 64 Falcon without getting personalized plates.

  • Calif Black Plates.....I heard recently thru a reliable source the Y.O.M. law pertaining to the black plates has finally passed after the 3rd try and will become law either July 2008 or 2009. YOM is Year of Manufacture.

In the case where the black plates are still registered to your car and under a "non-op" status, should just be a matter of paying the new registration. But, if they are just on the car and NOT in non-op status with DMV, then you may have a problem.

Fred...Thanks for your input...and Yes, the last year the car was registered/driven in CA was 1982 with the original "UYA XXX" Black/Gold plate(s)...I have only the rear plate now....Sooo, I plan to order a pair of new Black/Gold repos from the above vendor and then deal with CA DMV to re-activate my original plate number. I have also heard of others doing this...though I'm not sure exactly how. I'll just start out buy first calling DMV...as I have 2 to 3 months before the car will be ready for the road.
