Any idea what vehicle it is in?? that MAY help
From the outside and what you would see in the photo they are virtually identical.
The photo does show the "early" completely close valve covers and the vent tube in the timing cover.
Looks like a truck or boat application to me.
NEVER seen an air cleaner like that.
Not much I can add beyond this.
Anyone know what that "cable" is coming out of the back of generator? Looks like a TACH drive cable, but that can't be right????

That may be a Corvette generator with the tach drive.

Did the early 289's have the vent tube from the timing cover?
anyone know what thet sticker is "76P" on the tube?
yes, thats a tach drive cable!
That is a 260 cid engine they had the oil fill tube in the front cover.

thanks bigemike, thats what I thought too, which prompted this thread, then I found this, which says early 289 hipo's had the oil fill tube in the timing cover as well. are there any other external differences between the 260 and 289. http://www.hipomustang.com/images/hipoeng/
From just the picture, it is difficult to say what it is. There is just not enough detail. Oil fillers in the timing chain cover were on 221, 260, 289, and 289 HiPos -- anything used in 1963 production and road draft tube cars late in 1964 production. This engine has obviously been modified from production for a specific application.
"This engine has obviously been modified from production for a specific application".
thanks bob, can you identify any particular modifications
If I remember correctly the early 221 & 260 block casting number (C2OE) was located at the top rear of the block just behind the intake manifold. The 289 casting number (C3AE, C4OE, C5AE, C6AE) is located on the block behind the starter motor.
