GT -Transverse exaust

  • Simply put, the answer is "no".

The transverse dual exhaust system was phased out in the Fall of 1964, way before GT production began. It was replaced with the Arvin dual exhaust system, which was a high performance, low restriction design that featured two "straight through" mufflers and two resonators that were finished off with subtle turn down tips that are just visible beneath the rear valence panel.

Due to many customer complaints about the high noise level of the High Performance "Arvinode" exhaust system, a more conventional muffler/resonator design replaced the Arvinode setup by April of 1965, and was used on the GT Mustangs with the signature trumpet outlets in place of the turn down tips found on non GT cars in 1965-66.

  • Gene,

As much as we have discussed this the only photos that I have seen on the site are the skeletal remains that CT posted a while back. Does anyone have any decent pics of the Arvinode system? Exterior or undercarriage would be welcome. Maybe Fred Ballard has some stuff he can share.

  • The only picture that I have of an Arvinode system is for a 65 Fairlane Hipo and it only goes to the rear axle. The Arvinode system went with my 65 Hipo Fairlane sports coupe when I sold it. I am sure that the new owner has not installed it as yet so I can probably get a picture of the rear part as well if there is a need. Just as a side note, I do have a couple of NOS Hipo transverse mufflers that I came across recently. They are date coded for 10-64 and 12-65.

  • The 10-64 transverse muffler has FoMoCo in block letters where the 12-65 has the Ford oval. The 12-65 is just a later service part however it is the first one that I have seen with that late of a date code. Both of these are free of any corrosion.

  • I have the differential out of my 12/30/64 San Jose car for undercarriage detailing and was able to take these shots. The car is a non-GT hipo. The car does not have the bolt holes for the GT configuration as it was built prior to 03/65 when the GT exhaust was introduced. The hangers that are shown were on the car when I bought it and appear consistent with Jeff's images. I will be refreshing the hanger rubber during this project. (I think the white stripe on the one hanger is a white wall tire section.) Scott McNair, a former Ford factory manger in San Jose, has told me that San Jose hipos did not all receive the Arvinode system due to distribution shortages at the time. Because of this information and the fact that the hangers were on the car, I chose to put the tranvese system back on the car. The system you see here is a Motive Industries reproduction supplied by NPD. I have run the car with the Motive rear muffler and a NOS Ford rear muffler like the one in Jeff's pictures above. The Ford muffler has a deeper sound and does fit the system, but the one I had was shelf worn and I wanted to prepare for concours driven events so I used the Motive piece. The system required a bit of work in the muffler shop to get it to fit properly, including cutting and rotating the intermediate pipes. When I spoke to Motive about the need to fit the system they told me they had never test fit the system on a car because they had not had access to an original hipo for mock-up. Their rear muffler was right on, but the intermediate mufflers and pipes were several degress off in roation and were up against the emergency brake cables. Cutting and rotating the intermediate pipes by a few degrees solved the clearance issue at the cables. It is a good sounding system.

  • Gene,

Then if the Arvinode system was not phased out until April of 65 is it possible that some GTs came with this system with trumpet exaust tips? Were the rear hangers on the Arvinode system screwed into the side rails as the transverse or were they nut and bolted thru the frame rail as the GT dual exaust? Thanks for the pics...
