AM Radio wiring

  • Hi Fellas

I am wishing to re fit an original Motorola AM radio.

I have studied the wiring diagram I have and it shows a yellow black lead coming from the fusebox ending in a 3 way socket.

There then appears to be a yellow black extension lead one end of which has a male bullet, the other having a female bullet sleeve into which the radio power lead plugs in.

    1. does this seem right for a 1965 13R Deraborn car ?

    2. The radio has a short black earth lead with a male bullet, what does this connect to ?, if another extension lead, what colour and where does it fix to ?.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Well this may confuse more than help. In any case, my wiring diagram calls out the wire from the fuse box with the 3 socket female connector as blk in color. The schematic also shows a yel/blk wire from that 3 socket female connector going to the short single pin male connector (no color defined) at the radio. Lastly, the two wire blk/grn male/female plug at the radio connects to the speaker lead.

If the schematic is accurate, the short blk male connector is not a gnd but is the power input to the radio. Although not shown on the schematic, I believe the radio when installed, picks up its chassis ground through both the radio support bracket which attaches to the back of the radio and the underside of the dash, and the nuts which secure the radio knob assemblies to the front of the dash.

I'd sure get out the ole electrical/ohm meter to verify.

  • There is a short (about a foot long) single conductor cable from that three pin receptacle (switched) to the hot lead (black) of the radio (65 p/n C5DB-18A919-A, 66 p/n C6ZB-18A919-A). The bullet connectors on the 65 version may be either black or yellow. I don't know what the difference is between 65 and 66 types. The second connection is for the radio light which goes to another three pin receptacle that has a blue-red stripe feed. Ground ("earth" to the English) is thru mechanical connections.

  • Well well, that sure fooled me.

I looked inside the radio and because the black lead was soldered to the case I thought it was ground.

I looked again and I see it is in fact soldered to a copper coloured strip which has a thin copper wire coming off it.

So two live feeds, any clue as to where I find the second live socket?

My diagram only shows one feed to the radio so is clearly useless.

    Thank you

    Ok heres where I'm at

Jim thanks but I cannot blow up that diagram enough to read it.

I understand all, I just need to find the second 3 pin female ( blue-red stripe feed.

I suppose I could plug both feeds into the first 3 socket lead from the fusebox but would rather find the blue -red feed.

Does it come from the ign switch or someplace else?

On that link, scroll down to 66 accessories. It's close enough for your car's application and large enough to see.

Only shows one power wire to the radio on that.

I'll have a look under the dash to see what there is.

  • The second wire on the radio is for the light.

Yes I get that Fred, but where does this lead connect to in the car?

none of the diagrams even show it.

    Thanks

  • The light lead plugs into a triple female plug hanging near the heater controls. The wire will be blue with a red tracer as it is on the same circuit as the dash lights. That plug will generally be empty depending on vehicle options. The Rally Pac lights attach to that same triple plug if you have a Rally Pac. The diagram below shows the light if you look above the radio picture to where the Rally Pac loom connects. There is a light symbol that is marked as the radio light.

  • Thanks a bunch Fred.

I was too busy looking at the radio on the diagram to notice that the bulb was listed seperatly.

Thanks to your location description I should be able to find that wire in the car.

You'll all be pleased to know I dont have any more wireing questions

    Thanks everyone
