I've owned four early Mustangs with disc brakes and all had the body painted gray from the factory.

Somewhat related to this thread, can anyone who had and/or has disc brakes as originally fitted on their 64-67 Kar comment on their operation? Remarks were made on the Vintage Mustang Forum about disc-braked Kars that made the units out to be problematic: sticking, corrosion problems,and upkeep were the chief complaints.
Were there problems with the proportioning valves as well?

I've owned drum and disc brake cars and have never had problems with either system if the they were properly maintained. In my opinion the disc brake cars have a markedly better feel and firmer pedal.

The original installed ones on Mustangs were left natural and the over the counter parts were painted.Ford didn't want rust on new parts they sold over the counter is why most are painted.

I totally disagree with that. I have found many original proportioning valves with gray paint still on them or bubbling off.

I have to agree here. I owned and restored a 65 shelby car # 142 that had 27,000 original miles on it and the valve was gray. I used a "machine gray" that matched almost perfectly.

Wow,I thought this was an open forum to contribute what you've had,have and or seen.Since all of you who disagreed know everything about all these Mustangs and have owned them all and or worked the assembly line at all three plants I appreciate the input.

Nothing wrong with sharing your experience and observations. It's the collective experience and observations by everyone here that help answer questions and help us better understand obscure details such as proportioning valve detailing.

So we have 3 for painted and 1 against with a couple wild cards in the mix corvette/thunderbird, Food for thought,The machine grey was that Eastwoods paint or another make.Interesting all this,Does any of you have photo's of the valves fitted to the cars before any resto' work to back this up.<img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Short answer is yes I have pictures of the ones on my UNRESTORED 65's.Nether one has been touched.Both are gray.

The machine gray was probably Krylon or something like that, I hardly ever use any eastwood products.

Not the greatest pic, but here is an original from a '65 GT. You can see the paint peeling off, most likely due to being exposed to brake fluid and rusting.

Mine was painted gray, I don't have a picture of it installed but I still have it in a box as a spare to be rebuilt.
