Intake Manifolds, S2MS vs S1MS

  • Looking to upgrade the stock intake (k-code motor) to one of these units. I would appreciate some advice on the difference (performance, fit, price) between these two units and which would be easier to locate.

Also, what carb. match would be best? Presently I have a 650cfm holley with mechanical secondaries (tranny is 4-speed).

    Thanks, Tom.

  • The 1S is much more difficult to come by and came only on the '65 Shelbys. The 2S is reproduced and readily available. Shelby put a Holley 715 on the early Shelby's and it is designed for road racing. Your particular application will affect what kind of carb you want.

Intersting...so what did they put on the '66 shelby's?

    S2MS

  • The S1 intake has physically smaller runners than the S2 does. That is a little known fact, but true. Therefore the S2 intake will make slightly more power than the early intake does. The S2 intake will actually make some pretty good power. I will give some dyno results pretty soon on a 331ci hipo shelby engine I just finished.

The S1 intake came on some 289 cobra cars (the early 289 cobra cars had a small letter cobra intake with no S1MS number on them) as well as the 1965 shelby mustangs.

Another little known fact is that the late 65 GT350 R-Models used S2MS intakes due to their greater power making ability. Every little bit helped.

They used whatever they had in stock.

  • Be carefull in buying old originals and many of the

S2MS's as well: the extreme corners had a tendency

to crack off when the intake bolts were tightened

and had to be heliarched back together. Also, where

the intake terminates a head water jacket hole,

there will be eroding of that aluminum surface.

When buying sight unseen, it's buyer beware unless

you find an honest seller or have someone trusted

enough to inspect OLD aluminum as these intakes are.

Where would I find a 2S as you say it's readily available?
