Replacement carpet fit and quality

  •
quote:

So why is it "high" on the shifter tunnel then? Sounds like you need to use a heat gun on the back side to soften up the mold so it will lay down.

I will try that in the spring. I already did some of that and discovered that you have to be carefule because the heat gun melts the carpet. The main point is that it is high because the quality of the product is poor - they cannot eve shape the carpet well enough. I sure wish an alternative was available.

  • I'm going to contact the company and complain. Doubt if it will get me anywhere but you gotta start somewhere. Hope others do the same. Be sure to let them know you will spread the word of the inferior quality they are currently offering....

...I am taking out better carpet than I am putting in because the color has faded in some areas.

If the original carpet is just faded and not worn, you might be able to use some fabric dye to get the color to match again.

  • Another set of carpet arrived. This box was dated March 2002 and when opened contained some carpet that looked more like Mustang carpet than any so far. The color was very close, the loop was in distinctive rows, the texture although thinner than the original Ford issue was really not that bad. The rear area at the interior quarter trim panels that had been a trouble spot were on this carpet cut perfectly and bound correctly and neatly with the correct color thread. The rear section fits like a glove. The front is another story. It has been wadded up in a box for five years and the vinyl foot pad and ankle pad are VERY distorted but I think that enough time may help them. They are under pressure right now being dewrinkeled if that is a word. Now this is all good news but it presents the problem that the rear fold down area does not even come close to matching the front part. The rear area was just put in a month ago. I called NPD - they have bent over backward- and told them again my tale of woe. We are old freinds by now and they said they will do their best to locate some older carpet to match the stuff for the front and will send it. They would probably like to bomb my shop and me in it. Anyway, IF you purchase carpet look it over carefully. I would say that the quality of ACC is in the crapper. Look for some older boxes - they might fit better. If ever there was a business opportunity for someone --- the carpet business right now needs a new player. As promised will keep you all posted as this saga continues. Good luck if you are buying replacement carpet right now. Are others of you finding the same problems? Share your misery with me.

  • I received a PM here from the VP of ACC which I will post upon receiving his permission. He appears to be very concerned with the number of complaints and is looking into the problems. Let's hope something constructive evolves from this!

  • Ok, here's what I got:

quote:
I was made aware of this forum this morning. Your's is but the first in the line of issues I'm going to attempt to tackle. I take a great deal of pride in our company and it greatly concerns me that there are this many negative comments being made. It is the nature of people to complain more than compliment but there are some obvious concerns with this many negatives. If you will, please tell me what your specific complaints may be so that I can personally look into them. I sincerely apologize for any problems that you have had. If I can be of assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

And his reply after asking if I could post it:

quote:
Merlyn,

Please feel free to post my message. I intend to help and address all the problems that I can. I have received several complaints as of late and we have our VP of Manufacturing looking into the problems that have been stated. We are going to determine if it is a molding problem and if so if it is an operator error or mechanical problem. We have also been looking into the color concerns and the material quality issues. I want you and everyone to know that I know how much your car and projects mean to you and I want to be proud of the carpet you choose to put into it. Thank you very much for replying to my message and I hope to put your input to good use.

    Sincerely,

    Keith

  • Merlyn: Thanks for your information. I just sent an email to Keith at ACC about the issues I am having. I really do hope that he can get his company back in focus. I gave him my name and phone # also -- we will see what happens. I hope that others on this board also contact ACC if you had or are having problems. Let us hope that the problems are addressed and the carpet problem gets fixed. Of all of the things to have a problem with - something we have taken for granted was going to work now is causing headaches. To those of you with problems - please contact ACC at the addy Merlyn provided and give them an opportunity to make things better.

  • Just got a reply from Keith at ACC to the little bitch-o-gram that I sent him. He said he was looking into the problems I mentioned and they would attempt to make things better. He also said he hoped to see a better feedback on this forum after the improvements. He has done the easy part now by saying he wants to help - the difficult part is yet to come when they have to actually improve both their product and their image. I hope that they are succesful and that we all can once again get good service and good product from that company. I think that he would appreciate hearing from all of you outlining your experience with his product - both positive and not so positive. As for me, I am still trying to get a full set of just decent quality carpet that fits the floor and is all the same color and style.

  • I'll send him a note in the next couple of days. As for "positive feedback" following product improvements - that ain't hard to imagine at all. Even people who are not regulars to this site ask for recommendations - and you guys offer them up. Some recent positive recommendations: clutches, carburetors and distributor caps. Negatives: fastback seat trim, regulators and carpet. Man, if I bought a nice set of carpet, I might post a sign in my front yard.

  • Just reviewed the posts on this subject (carpets) after attempting to put carpet in my latest k project. Like I said before, most of the stuff out there right now is junk as far as the resto business goes. ACC says they will address the problem. Good luck. Do you think they just make mustang carpet? I would bet that if you held a convention right now of restorers and rebuilders, you would hear horror stories from every different car applications from AMX's to Willys. I think they are beyond immediate help to the mustang restorer. Face it friends, we now live in a world of cheap, throw away crap, mostly made outside the good ole USA. Like I have said before, I am working on my last three projects. I am getting to old to wait for the good repo parts revolution.

  • If I remember correctly, there are two grades of ACC carpet. One is named "ACC" and the other is "ACS". I recently purchased a set of carpeting from a supplier in a box that read "ACS" and opened it in front of him. It was a piece of crap! Barely any backing glue and no jute padding. He told me that the "ACS" branded carpet was the less expensive of the ACC offering. I asked him why he assumed I wanted the cheaper carpet. Do I look that much like a pauper? I asked him to look in his inventory for the oldest ACC carpet box he could find in my color. He did find a box dated Sep-00. And this carpet was perfect! Now, his excuse for selling the "ACS" was he makes a higher profit margin per carpet than the "ACC". Sorry to think this guy believes we restore our cars for profit. I'll take my business to a company that cares about customers and not the almighty $. Kevin

  • I, too fell victim to the lumpy transmission hump after recently installing some ACC. Would like a resolution to the problem. My car is an MCA concours trailered car and most everything else is like I expected.

Hopefully the VP of ACC will reply to this forum and offer a resolution.

  • Just to bring all of you up to speed. Have been sent two more sets of fastback fold down area carpet. None matches in either color or texture to the floor section that was dated 2000. The older carpet was acceptable, the newer is a POS. NPD has done more than I expected to fix this, ..ACC must have drastically changed their material and colors. Today I will send by overnight delivery to NPD a sample of the floor section, they are sending that to ACC so they can attempt to match. Kickpanel and fold down are what is causing the problem now. And yes, the hump in the middle even on the 2000 carpet is not great. I have a console and that hides a multitude of sins. Yes, even the older carpet is skimpy, and yes the older carpet is a little short in the upper right hand corner. Yes, the shifter hole is mislocated from center. Am I happy? So far all the word from ACC is that they are looking into the problem and hope to see a better feedback on this forum after they "correct" things. Once again, I hope they get their stuff together. A good business opportunity is ripe for somebody if they wanted to go into the Mustang carpet business. Will post more when something develops. This started in October by the way.

  • Reading all these posts makes me glad I still have a nice original carpet in my car. A few years ago, I was thinking of getting a replacement by ACC, but it seems that would have been a mistake.

Perhaps you should let them "borrow" it so maybe they can get it right this time...

Just kidding, but maybe they need an old throw-away to at least get the molding right. I'm afraid material quality is probably a lost cause since everything probably comes from overseas these days. I doubt the few US manufacturers left want to mess with small quantity runs. I'd be surprised if they actually do anything stateside other than distribute what they sell. Heck, try buying anything made in America. Even if you do find something "assembled" here it is probably made from imported materials...
