Replacement carpet fit and quality

  • The Raylon is quite different than the old 80/20. It looks much the same but I feel it will wear much better. Only time will tell! It does not "fuzz" like the older carpet. Also it is my understanding that when you order the 80/20 you will get the raylon although no mention is made of that in the ACC printed material that I have read. California Mustang has been selling the raylon product for several years and probably has the most history of it durability. When ACC bought out its only competitor they also got the Raylon product and changed to it as soon as they sold their old inventory. I am not sure it will wear as well as the Ford carpet of yesteryear but is in my opinin a step in the right direction. For what it is worth some Corvette parts companies have been selling the Raylon carpets for use in the older Vetts that originally came with the 80/20 and to the best of my knowledge have had few issues thus far. Mid America Corvette has used the Raylon and may give you some insight about how it is "working" for them. The biggest improvement in the ACC carpet is the mass backing (just my opinion of course) due to the way it fits and makes the carpet feel much better than it is.

  • For what its worth, on the dyeing matter If your carpet is not worn but faded, dyeing with a fabric dye can be a way out especialy for black that has gone brown as there are no shading issues. I dyed the faded carpets on my Lotus for the exact reason that you guys are having problems with - no suitable replacement. I did it about 15 years ago, they came up like new and are still good.

  • UPDATE: 3/9/2009: My restorer Nate Miller of Buckeye Auto Restoration has tried to make the absolute CRAP ACC carpet fit my '65 Convertible, heat guns, irons, everything....he finally jerked it out and ordered a new set from TRIM PARTS which he had delt with many years ago but didn't think they were still in business, TRIM PARTS GUARANTEED him that their carpet would fit right, so we'll have to see what happens from here, he is going to take ACC their CRAP carpet to their booth in Charlotte and demand a refund! I get the feeling that ACC believes that they have the only game going, may be thats about to change....stay tuned.....

  • That's interesting. I wasn't aware that any other manufacturer actually makes carpet for our Mustangs. Are we absolutely certain they just aren't reselling AAC carpet?

  • Just installed some ACC carpet in a 69 (got the mass back version) and it fit pretty well in that application. Needed a little extra padding on the front section over the tunnel but believe the problem is more the junk underlayment rather than the carpet.

    Just reporting

  • Does anyone have suggestions on purchase of black carpet for 64.5 coupe as I want the original style edge weaving like it came and want a nice fit?

  • RPM & ALL, CALL TRIM PARTS!!!!! Their carper is FAR FAR SUPERIOR over ACC!!! Nate tells me that the heel & toe pads are even sewed in like the original carpet, not glued in like ACC, I'll bet they have and can do the unique 64.5 carpet set as well as the later style we used in my Kar!!!!

Checking their website, they do have a specific listing for 64 1/2. As suggested, give'm a call!

  • Yes, By all means call TRIM PARTS & tell them that you were refered to them by Nate of Buckeye, and me, Rick, the owner of the K convertible that received their GREAT carpet!!

  • Anyone attending the upcoming Charlotte Auto Fair is more than welcome to stop by the Buckeye booth and see my carpet for themselves, really great fit and quality!!

  • 6hypo5conv, nice choice on the carpet. I would order from Trim Parts if I was replacing carpet today based on the carpet in your car. BTW, beautiful job on your vert.

  • Yes, I'm resurrecting this thread.... I feel it's important to have a written record of this stuff so that the corporate "suits" can't keep saying nobody else has any issue....must be your fault. I think the manufacturers need to hear what's going on.

As you have read in this thread, I put new Mass Backed ACC carpet in my convertible in the spring of 2008. I was pleased with how easy it was to install. The mold was strong and tight. There were no wrinkles or other things other than the tranny tunnel was a bit large/high, but not a deal breaker for me at the time. I have to believe it was the 80/20 loop b/c it gets very fuzzy easily and doesn't wear well at all. I suggest never wearing shoes in a car with this carpet and never vacuuming it hard if you want it to last.

Fast forward to March/April 2010 - I'm doing my '65 fastback carpet now. I can report that the black RAYLON carpet seems to be much better with respect to wear. It does not yet appear to get fuzzy and I've been working it hard trying to get it to lay down/fit. Still no fuzzies. Time will tell about fading.

The bad news is that I had to give up on my first set and order a new one. The back fit OK (maybe, as I haven't installed the interior panels yet to confirm. The front fit was terrible. Couldn't get the wrinkles/creases out, way too large over the transmission hump (I have a 4 speed). After wasting an entire day, I gave up. If I hadn't had such an easier install on my convertible I would have thought I was doing something wrong.

The current second set was a little better in regards to fit. I think they left it in the mold longer. Still not as good as my convertible experience. Wrinkling/poor fit in the heel/toe pad area, and over the hump were large long "dents" in the carpet and backing. I spent days and hours trying to relax things. Heat guns, damp towel ironing, etc...I couldn't fix it. The heel pad doesn't lay down flat near the tunnel area, and never will (no problem here on my 'vert carpet) Perhaps it would settle after being partially installed for a while? Well, it's impossible to partially install this without cutting a good 4-6 inches off the ends in all 3 trimmable directions. The shifter area also needs to be cut. Well, have fun returning cut carpet...

This second set is now installed, but not without the visible problems of the dents, and wrinkles on the trans tunnel area. Where the front overlaps the back, the front has a sort of serged edge. Well, my black carpet should have a black edge, no? I see metal like stitching all along this highly visible edge with seemingly no yarn or other black material covering it up. There are also a few areas were the nap is not even and I have a few "high" loops that stick up way past the rest. I have little/faith that a 3rd set will be any better as I was assured the vendor rep personally inspected this set prior to shipping, and it was custom made for me (twice). At this point, I'm giving up and will have to live with what I have. Thank goodness it's a driver.

Still, I find the consistency and quality control of this carpet company to be highly inadequate. I think we need to voice our opinions with real world feedback and insist on better carpet. I honestly hope your installation experience goes well. It seems to be hit or miss... I still think the mass backing is a good idea when it works well, but if there is any problem with the carpet, the extra mass backing exacerbates the problem.

I have also read elsewhere that Trim Parts makes carpet. I have further read that they are both using the same carpet, supplied by Dorset. I can't confirm this as fact, but it's what I read.

    Troy

  • Junk, junk, and more junk. I thought ACC promised they would make better carpet for us. Looks like the same ol shit in under a new disguise. Thanks for the heads up Troy.

  • The last good set of carpet that I installed on a 65 mustang was in 1994. All you had to do was install it on a 100 degree plus day. You almost died, but you got it to fit. What I would try, is to set it out on the blacktop for about an hour. you may get it to fit that way.

He He, that depends on where in the world you have your blacktop - if I tried that at the moment I would not be able to get the carpet through the car door <img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • I looked at Trim Parts website and looks like they sell Chevy stuff as I didn't see any Mustang parts?I need carpet for early car also.
