67 K-code Restoration

  • This is a continued topic from the general diskussion thread, I was asked to move it here for a better fit on the forum.

    Update on the Kar:

The picture tell the story of were we are in the project. These pictures are not for the faint of heart here she is naked, stripped for your viewing.

In Picture #3 you can see the firewall has a lot of work to be done. Time was not kind to the horse, nor was the Michigan salty winter roads. You can also see that the new door hinges are installed. Floors and inner frame rails are next on the list.

We are still in need of pictures of the front markings on the sway bar (the green and yellow marks) if some one can help. The hole front suspension is off and is being rebuilt.

As for the engineering numbers on the rear springs the are hard to read:

    C7 ZA 73Z

    5556AM

Again this is very hard to read and maybe wrong. A question for all does the rear spring painted or phosphate and oil?

The Kar was delivered with PB. And has what we believe is the original engine (no vin on the block but all k parts and correct date codes) The trans. is a four speed, no vin correct date again. Any other help in the restoration, thoughts insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have also found a site that other maybe interested in: http://www.midcomustang.com/frameandfloor.shtml . They have line drawnigs of the body specifications of the 1965-1970 Mustang frame and under body platform. The measurements provided are used to ensure that the Mustang unibody is square, and the body mounting points are in the correct relative position to the under carriage and frame support members. Take a look.

  • Those dimensions are documented in the Shop Manuals. I don't know if they are common for all the years that are claimed. In any case, keep up the good work on your project.

This would not be the standard front sway bar marking for a 67 K code Mustang but do remember that this car was ordered with the very rare Comp Suspension.

Here is a picture of and example of that marking on an original car. Have seen the yellow slightly brighter on some other examples but the green has been consistent

The fuel pump will provide correct orientation

"AM" were used on these applications I would guess that since you state they were hard to read rust is an issue on many parts of your car.

Originally they were heat treated with natural untreated bare steel clamps. The heat treating produced a very dark metal that can be reproduced by using some of the quick phosphating materials now available. But you do not want to truly phosphate the springs as it will damage the strengh.

Where and when was the car assembled? the lack of VIN on either is pretty odd since this had been a practice for three years prior to 67 on one of these items and less on the other.

    Thoughts/insight?

Spend allot of time doing the unibody correctly - can no stress this enough

  • Thanks you all for the help.

    J. Speegle, thanks for the picture and we are trying to get the underside done correct. The build date I believe was May, 67'.

I'll got the actual date here soon. Our thought on the rear leaf springs are to replace the middle springs or have them resprong.

Tom, Thanks again for your help. I do have your pictures saved on the computer.

I'll update the progress soon with more picture.

  • qballl, just got back from the suspension shop on the corner of M-81 and I-75. They looked up the correct arch for those rear springs and will re-arch them and put in new bushings and re clip them(I provide the clips)for $80.00.

    See ya this weekend.

  • Update:

The inner rockers and torque boxes are in. A hole new floor is being prepped. Still a lot of work to be done, and a lot of money to be spent.

Driver side is double stamped, passenger side one stamped.

Front passenger side suspension is temporally partially back together.

Question for all, the next picture is of the original floor pan that was removed. Note the four holes the larger hole is front center on both sides, I have not seen this on other 67' was this original from the factory? NPD does not have a cover for a hole this size.
